What's the weather like in Mykonos in March

With the arrival of March the warmer weather is just around the corner and the rain has lessened.

Temperature

The average temperature has risen to 12°C with average high/low temperatures of 8°C overnight and 15°C during the day. By the end of the month the days will be getting warmer and heading towards the summer highs of the mid-20s to 30°C.

Rainfall

Average rainfall has decreased quite dramatically from the highs of winter to 94mm falling over just 6 days. Rainfall will only get lower from now on, not reaching the same levels again until September. The chance of a rainy day has dropped to less than 20% at just 14%. The chance of a cloudy or overcast day is still quite high at 30% but there is a much less chance of rain to go with it.

Sunshine Hours

Sunshine hours are steadily increasing towards the summer high of in excess of 12 hours and are at 9 hours each day. This is an increase from winters 6 or 7 hours and means you are likely to get a fair bit of warming afternoon sunshine. This will give you plenty of time to explore the island of Mykonos in the sunshine. If you do get a rainy day there is still plenty to do indoors where it is dry.

Sea Temperature

The sea temperature is still low at just 16°C but by the end of March it will start getting warmer heading towards the summer high of 24°C. A walk along the beach is a good option even if the water is too cold but for less hardy souls.

The Milena Hotel in Drafiki is a family run hotel with a friendly atmosphere and a family environment. Mykonos Beaches for March

Many of the beaches are still a great place to visit regardless of the time of year. As long as the day is fine and free from rain a beach walk can be an enjoyable experience. See the beaches as they were before the tourists arrived on the island and filled them with deck chairs and beach umbrellas.

Ftelia Beach is located 10 km east of Mykonos Old Town to the north of Ano Mera. This beach does contain pebbles but is protected from the winds during this time of year. A pleasant beach for a spring walk with friends and family.

South of Chora is Glyfadi Beach near Ormos that is part sand and part pebbly beach. This beach is good for snorkelling when the weather warms up and it is not a busy beach even in the height of summer.

Bars and Restaurants

Open from March to October is the Mediterranean and Italian cuisine of La Cucina di Daniele in Ano Mera. The wine list is extensive with bottles from Italy, Greece and the USA, over 300 labels. Dishes are simple and made from the freshest ingredients available. Some signature dishes include Carpaccio di zucchini, marinated octopus, and stuffed rabbit and lobster risotto.

M-eating Restaurant and Bar is open every evening from 7pm until 1am and is located in Kalogera Street Old Town. The friendly staff can help you choose a wine to match your food choices and answer any questions you might have about the menu. Choose from Greek and Mediterranean inspired food such as Tomato Soup, Onion Pie, Goats cheeses, octopus and vegetables as well as fresh seafood. Try foods found just on Mykonos such as the Mykonian sausage. The range of desserts also includes the Mykonian Honey Pie.

Things to do in Mykonos in March

An ideal place to visit on a fine day in the cooler months is the island of Delos, just a stone's throw from Mykonos. The island contains many ancient structures; temples and sanctuaries that are dedicated to various Greek Gods. It is the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis and there are remains on Mt Kinthos that date back to the 3rd millennia BC. The island was its most prosperous during the Late Hellenistic and Roman periods. Formally excavated in 1872, the only people on the island are the French archaeologists and guards of the sites. See the many marble monuments and statues, temples, and site museum that contain many artefacts. Other artefacts can be seen in the Archaeological Museum on Mykonos.

A visit to Manto Mavrogenous Square and you will see a statue of the Greek war heroine who the square is named after. This is a very popular in the summer months so coming here in March it will not be as crowded and you can wander amongst the shops, boutiques, cafes and nearby streets in relative peace.

Art galleries are great places to visit if the weather turns wet and the Rarity Gallery is no exception. Located in Kalogera Street, the gallery has works by many artists from around the world including Peter Anton, Hugh Arnold, Ito Hirotoshi and many others. See paintings, sculpture and photographs from all over the world.
