What's the weather like in Mykonos in January

Winter is in full swing in January but the days can still reach a pleasant 12°C though night time temperatures drop well below 10°C.

Temperatures in the low to mid-teens are more common and significantly lower than the summer average high/low temperatures of 18 to 30°C seen in July and August.

The cooler temperatures rule out beach activities but the weather is still pleasant enough to explore the winding streets and museums across the island. Always bring some wet weather gear as this is the wettest time of the year with average rainfall up to 135mm of rain falling on 6 days this month. This is less than the previous autumn season and less than February will receive, but significantly more than the rainfall experienced in summer where you may get up to 35mm each month.

Sunshine Hours

Mykonos Beaches for January

You may not want to swim at this time of the year, but the coastline is lovely for taking a bracing walk and admiring the views. Kapari Beach is at the end of a drive around the island and is behind the chapel of Agios Ioannis. You will need to look out for the signs while on your drive so you don't miss the turn offs.

Divounia Beach is located 12 kilometres south and east from Chora and is a small beach in the small village of Divounia. This is one of the most secluded beaches on the island and is perfect for a private and peaceful walk. The beach does have a few pebbles and recently remains have been found dating back to the Romans. There are two taverns to enjoy a meal and drink after your walk.

Platis Gialos is a popular beach area with many facilities even in the winter months. There are several bars and restaurants for meals and drinks and shops for that special present for someone. You can catch a bus from Mykonos town to the beach as parking is limited.

Bars and Restaurants

With great views and excellent food the Madoupas Cafe located in Yialos old town on the tourist strip. The food is excellent with a good choice of Greek and other cuisines. Breakfast is particularly good. They have everything from Greek salads, seafood, steaks and desserts with excellent coffee and cold drinks.

If you're after fresh sandwiches and salads, try Piccolo located in Drakapoulou Street Chora. Also try the fresh juices and their own tuna salad and chicken salad. A specialty of here is the traditional sweets.

For something away from Greek cuisine try Mex, a Mexican beer house with over 100 varieties to choose from and some great snack food. Located in Lakka.

For crepes try the Suisse Cafe in Riga Fereou Chora. Open till 3.30am every day for great food, sandwiches and drinks as well as homemade pastries.

Things to do in Mykonos in January

The Archaeological museum is located in the prefecture of Kiklades and is open during winter months on Tuesday and Friday to Sunday from 8am to 3pm. Admission is free on Sundays during winter. Built in 1902 the museum houses the remains from the purification pit on the small island of Rhenia that had objects from as far back as 426BC. There are 4 main collections: pottery dating from the 25th century to the 1st century BC, clay figures from the 1st and 2nd century BC, Funerary statues and grave objects from the 1st and 2nd century BC and jewellery and other small pieces from the same time period. The museum houses very little from Mykonos itself but houses all the objects from Rhenia. This is fascinating way to spend a rainy or chilly day.

Little Venice is located on Alevkantra beach where the houses reach right down to the sea with many balconies hanging over the water. The area is visited by many artists wanting to capture the colours of Mykonos against the blue of the Aegean Sea. Wander up and down the streets and check out the many art galleries and stores or have a coffee in a cafe or a glass of local wine in one of the bars.
