What's the weather like in Mykonos in February

February is the end of winter and it is the last cooler and wetter month before spring takes over with warmer day time temperatures and less rain.

Temperature

Average temperatures are low at 9°C, but temperatures will never reach freezing. The average high/low temperature range sees a low of 6° to a high of 12°C. Days will start warming up now towards the summer average of 26°C. Warm clothing is still desirable as the nights are still cold but days can be pleasant, especially after a storm when the sun will shine for the rest of the day. The beaches and coastal areas may be a bit cold but the interior of the island has many places to explore on a rainy afternoon.

Rainfall

Average rainfall heads towards 150mm this month before dropping off in March to less than 100mm towards the summer low of just 35mm. Chance of rain has increased to a high of 27% with a 33% chance of a cloudy and overcast day so the weather is a bit changeable at this time of year.

Sunshine Hours

Average sunshine hours are slowing increasing towards 8 hours a day and then on to the summer high in excess of 12 hours a day. The chances of a sunny day has increased from the winter low of 19% to a higher 24% before the summer chance of 97% in July. The chances of a windy day is at 62% while in summer it actually increases to more than 70% due to the summer onshore breeze that cools the coastal areas.http://www.holiday-weather.com/mykonos/averages/january/

Sea Temperature

Sea temperatures have dropped another degree from the January average of 16°C to an annual low of 15°C so you might not want to swim just yet!  The sea will start to warm up from next month towards the very pleasant and warm 26°C evident in July and August.

Mykonos Beaches for February

The sea water is still too cold for any but the hardiest individuals but a beach is still a nice place to spend a few hours on a sunny day in winter. You are spoilt for choice on Mykonos with many scenic and great beaches along the coastline. The sea temperature starts to increase towards the end of the month so a picnic by the water is a nice way to spend your day.

After a winter storm the sun usually shines for the rest of the day so a walk on a beach is a good aim. Agios Stefanos is one such place to head to. This beach is the closest to Mykonos and the new port with plenty of facilities all year round.

Megali Ammos Beach is just a short walk from Chora and an ideal end to a winter walking tour of the town. It is next to the main road so is quiet even in summer but the soft sand makes it a good destination. There are taverns nearby where you can enjoy lunch and a drink after your walk.

Bars and Restaurants

For excellent food go to Avli tou Thodori Restaurant located at Platis Gialos a seaside village on the eastern side of Mykonos. Choose from traditional Greek and modern Greek food for starters, mains and desserts as well as snacks and cocktails. Sit by the beach and enjoy a coffee or wine and relax with a snack or a full meal.

Also located on Platis Gialos is the Blue Myth Restaurant offering you a variety of Greek dishes with dancing and music on Tuesdays and Sundays on 'Greek Nights'.

If you are after excellent gourmet food you need to go to Bill and Coo for fresh seasonal food of excellent quality. The Lounge Bar at the same location offers you cocktails and a variety of alcoholic drinks.

Things to do in Mykonos in February

Winter is the ideal time to visit the many indoor attractions on Mykonos including the Aegean Maritime Museum located in the town of Chora in a 19th century Cycladic building, representing the rich maritime history of the area. See models of early Minoan ships and those up to the present day and many historic documents and old rare books in the library section. As well as a collection of maps and engravings there are many ancient tools and objects. This is also the first museum here to restore historical exhibits such as the Armenistis Lighthouse and the Evangelistria, a sailing ship built in 1940.

Located on the northern tip of the island is the Armenistis Lighthouse that was erected in 1891 and is 19 metres tall towering over the end of the island and its neighbouring land and out to sea. It stands overlooking the water between Mykonos and Tinos. The stone lighthouse is octagonal in shape and has a focal plane of 184m. You need to travel a rough road through San Stefanos and past Houlakia Bay.

With its location on the sea lanes, the island of Mykonos is also famous for its many windmills. The Windmills or Kato Milli are a great place to visit in the colder weather. One of the windmills is open to the public and the area is lively at sunset with good opportunities for photographs. The grain from around the area was milled here before transported over the world. Located south east of the town and on the seaside, the windmills were important to the economy in the time between the 17th and 19th centuries before mechanisation and the industrial revolution took over. There are 11 windmills in all.
