Queenstown, which is five hours drive from Milford Sound, is one of the best places to base yourself if you wish to explore the fiord but want to experience better weather than in Milford Sound. Queenstown's average rainfall is not as high for a start.

October is a lively month for Queenstown with the Spring Carnival bringing three days of fun ski and snowboarding activities. It is held at the Remarkables Ski Field during the first week of October.

The Queenstown Jazzfest takes place on the Labour Day weekend; the fourth Monday in October. The festival features popular Kiwi acts, as well as international bands that perform at different venues throughout the town.
