June is the beginning of summer in Mellieha, and the beautiful weather is getting hot and sunny. This is an ideal month for a beach holiday and making the most of the warm Mediterranean climate. For those who prefer a city break, Marseille in France has similar temperatures to this resort, but a little more rainfall. The length of each day is fairly constant throughout this month with around 11 average hours of sunshine each day. The sun rises at approximately the same time on each day throughout the whole month at around 5.45am, and sets at around 8.15pm.

Temperatures are gradually increasing in June, and the average temperature is 230C, with daily highs of around 280C and overnight lows of 180C. The highest recorded temperature at this resort at this time of year was a hot 400C, while the coldest was 140C. With these beautiful daytime temperatures and the warm Mediterranean, this is a great time of year for a swim and sunbathe before relaxing and watching the sun go down over the bay.

The humidity can become a problem in summer, as the temperature rises and humidity ranges from 45% to a sticky 95%. The wind can be cooling if coming from the north, and average wind speeds are between 0 m/s to 7 m/s, occasionally reaching gusts of 10 m/s.

Rainfall is not common in June, as this is one of the drier months of the year. Average precipitation is only 3mm that falls over 1 day during the month. Cloud cover is minimal, with generally clear skies that get clearer as the month progresses, from around 25% at the start of the month to just 13% at the end. If it does rain it is likely to occur at the start of the month, occurring on around 16% of days, while at the end of June the chance of rain drops to 8%. Check the weather forecast before heading out for the day.

Hit the beach

When the sea temperatures start rising in June reaching an average of 210C, head to the beautiful Golden Bay beach. This is a relatively undeveloped beach, but it is still very popular and there are many activities to do while visiting. There are all the facilities you need for a day at the beach, such as beach umbrellas, sun loungers, cafes and snack bars, while the more adventurous can get involved in jet skiing or banana boat riding. It is safe swimming for the family and has spectacular sunsets, making this a popular beach for people to head to late in the day. Lifeguards are on duty from June to September, and swimmers should be aware that, although it is generally safe to swim, there are strong currents at times.

Eating and drinking out

For a warm welcome, friendly service and great value for money, you can't go past Ix-Xatba restaurant in the town of Mellieha. This is the perfect place to take the children for dinner as the relaxed atmosphere, generous portions and helpful staff will make it a relaxed and pleasant evening out. Try the dishes including grilled meats, fish and seafood, pasta and desserts for those who still have room after dinner.

A lovely place for afternoon or evening drinks on the warm June days, go to the Mokka Lobby bar and terrace situated in the Radisson Blue resort at Golden Bay. This is the perfect spot for a quiet coffee and cake during the day, a sunset cocktail or night time drinks with friends, and serves light meals that are perfect for a relaxed evening. The service is attentive, the views are spectacular over the bay, and the bar has a great selection of beers, wines and spirits for all tastes.

The Baia Beach club is located at nearby Little Armier, and has prime position beachfront with great views of the Mediterranean Sea. This has an exclusive feel to it, and visitors can rent out sun loungers during the day and have their drinks served to them, or meet up with friends at the bar on the terrace later. Dishes served include burgers, steaks, fish and other international cuisine. This is a relaxed but stylish venue for lunch or dinner.

Things to do

A great way to spend a day in summer is to go on a Three island cruise. Starting out from Mellieha, the cruise takes guests around the bay before heading out to Comino to see the caves, and then to the island of Gozo. The trip includes a bus tour around the main sights of Gozo, plenty of time to stop and swim in the crystal clear waters around both Comino and Gozo, and opportunities for snorkelling. This is ideal for the whole family and is the best way to experience all that the islands of Malta have to offer. Just don't forget the hat and sunscreen!

For a safe, fun day out with the children, go to nearby Bugibba waterpark. Open from June to September, this new attraction is a great place for everybody, with wild adventurous activities for some, and relaxing, laid back activities for others. Have fun on the slides, including the newest attraction, The Black Hole slide, not for the faint-hearted! For those seeking a little less excitement, the lazy river is perfect or lay back on the sun loungers before enjoying some food and drinks at the on-site cafes.
