The weather in January is characterised by cold temperatures and wet weather. It is similar in climate to Lisbon in Portugal with its relatively mild conditions compared to the rest of Europe. The average temperature in this month is around 120C, although the days can reach a high of 150C with overnight lows of 90C. This is the coldest month of the year, and temperatures have dropped as low as 40C in past years, but also climbed to as high as 220C. Things to do

The Sanctuary of Our Lady church was built in the late 19th century and is situated on the hillside in the centre of Mellieha. The original and oldest part of the church was built in the 16th century and part of it still remains today, although the building has been extended many times over the years. The crypt is one of the natural caves that are found across Malta, and along with a great deal of fascinating history and culture of the site, there are also fantastic views over the bay to Gozo and Comino.

For great dining at the top of Mellieha hill with stunning views of the bay, go to Bouquet Garnir restaurant. This is a small, friendly restaurant with welcoming hosts who will ensure your dining experience is fantastic, and a charming atmosphere. Offering five-star service, the dishes include fish, seafood, meats and vegetarian options, while the wine list and dessert options are delicious as well. Try the homemade bread with some locally produced olive oil for something extra special.

For a lovely dinner in the town, the Al Ponte restaurant, located in the Maritim hotel, offers delicious Italian cuisine at great value. This à la carte restaurant is situated in a lovely building, under a rustic vault ceiling, with a beautiful terrace available for year-round dining outside. Known for its Mediterranean food, selection of local and international wines and with pizza cooked in a stone oven, this is a popular restaurant with both locals and visitors. 

For a family friendly restaurant located in the town, go to 717 Bar and Grill. This friendly restaurant serves delicious ribs, steaks, and barbecue, with sides of chips and wedges for the perfect place to take the whole family. The service is fast and friendly, and the desserts are to die for if there's still room after all that food. The house wines are also very good and match well with the main courses, while beers and soft drinks are available.
