This is a cold month for swimming in the sea, with sea temperatures a chilly 160C. Even if feeling brave enough to take part in some water sports, the air temperature will make you feel very cold when getting out of the water. The winds can bring the temperatures down even further, with wind speeds varying from 1 m/s to 8 m/s, and sometime reaching as strong as 12 m/s. The days are getting longer in this month, with around 6 hours of sunshine each day. Unless there is a reason to visit in February, those wanting a beach holiday may want to postpone their visit until the summer months such as June when the air and sea temperatures are warmer. Have a look at the forecast before travelling to see what the weather will be like for your visit.

Things to do

On cooler days in February, active visitors can go for a walk in some of Malta's beautiful countryside. The Marfa Ridge Country walk takes in farmland, wooded areas, bays and cliffs. Starting at Mellieha, passing the Red Tower and reaching the Marfa Ridge, walkers can enjoy the 11km trail that takes in chapels, the White Tower, interesting fauna and countryside, before reaching Paradise Bay. Heading back along dirt tracks and small paths along cliff sides, arriving back at the Red Tower and Mellieha approximately 4.5 hours later.

For visitors with an interest in Malta's fascinating and rich history, a visit to the National Museum of Archaeology is a must-see. Located a short drive from Mellieha in Valletta, this museum has displays dating back to the prehistoric times, from 5200BC to 2500BC. With exhibitions showing early settlers artefacts up to the temple building period on the islands, the main room contains temple carvings, models and a collection of tools, beads and pottery. This makes an interesting excursion from the resort and a good day trip in the winter months.
