What's the Weather Like in Mauritius in September

Temperature

The month of September is characterized by essentially constant daily high temperatures, with daily highs reaching a positively warm 24°C throughout the month and exceeding 27°C or dropping below 23°C only one day in ten. Furthermore, the cold season in Mauritius usually lasts from June 15th until September 21st, with an average daily high temperature below 25°C.

St Felix

St Felix is considered to be one of the most beautiful beaches in the south of Mauritius. The only problem with this beach is that swimming and bathing is not possible due to the strong sea currents and many coral reefs lying underneath the water.

Flic en Flac

Flic en Flac is located in the district of Black River on the western coast of Mauritius, found just 15km south of Port Louis. This 8km long beach is superb for a number of activities including walking, water sports, sun bathing and swimming. The beach is also very popular for afternoon picnics as there are many shaded areas scattered along the beach provided by the enormous palm trees.

Ille des Deux Cocos

Ille des Deux Cocos is a small island situated just five minutes away from the mainland of Mauritius. This tiny island is often described by visitors as "heaven on earth" due to its tranquil setting, clear turquoise waters and natural landscape. This beautiful island is also a very popular spot for weddings and honeymoons.

Roche Noires

Roche Noires, located north of Belle Mare Plage along the East Coast of Mauritius is one of the most photographed beaches on the island due to the black volcanic rocks that line part of the water's edge. Roche Noire is also a superb spot for safe swimming and sailing during the winter.

However, if you're a fan of Chinese cuisine you must try the highly recommended Dragon Vert, located in Quatre-Bornes, found in the centre of the island. This place serves up typical Chinese snacks throughout the day.

Another sports bar worth a try is the popular Big Willy's situated in La Barachois, Tamarin Bay. This place offers a drinks and food menu, as well as showing all the major sporting events on three wide screen TVs.

Grand Bassin

Grand Bassin, also known as Ganga Talao, is a crater lake situated in a secluded mountain area in the district of Savanne. Over the past couple of hundred years the lake has become a sacred place of pilgrimage for Hindus in Mauritius. At the Grand Bassin there is also a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and other Gods including Hanuman and Lakshmi.

Jummah Masjid Mosque

Another significant place of worship in Mauritius is the Jummah Masjid mosque, located in the capital of Port Louis. Located down Royal Road, the mosque is often described by many on the island as one of the most beautiful religious buildings in the country. Throughout the year many significant Islamic personalities and scholars visit the mosque. During the month of Ramadan there are also many Eid Prayers and spiritual programs taking place throughout the religious event.

Mare aux Vacoas

Mauritius offers a significant amount of natural attractions. Mare aux Vacoas is definitely worth a visit while staying on the island. This place is the largest reservoir in the country, located in Plaines Wilhelms, in the southwest of the Island. The reservoir has the capacity to hold up to 25.89Mm3 of water, which is provided to the upper Plaines Wilhems and to Moka.

Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated by Hindus across the globe on the fourth day of the lunar month in August and September. This popular festival commemorates the birth of the Hindu God Ganesh. Usually small replicas of the God, which is distinctively recognizable due to its elephant head, are taken to places of worship, beaches and river banks, including the Grand Bassin, so they can be immersed before sunset.

Father Laval Day (Jacques Desiree Laval) is celebrated every year on September 9th. This special event marks the birthday of the Blessed Father Jacques Desire Laval and is celebrated by Mauritians of all ethnic and religious backgrounds. Mauritians usually will visit the tomb of Father Laval in Sainte Croix, Port Louis to mark their respects. If you do not know much about Jacques Desire, he was a French Missionary born in 1803, who was believed to have had miraculous healing powers. He also became the protector of the slaves' community and has become the symbol of compassion and love throughout the island.
