Chinese New Year 👥
Despite the Mauritian Chinese community accounting for only about 3% of the population, the importance of their culture is recognized by the Spring Festival held on Chinese New Year, making it the only country outside Asia to celebrate Chinese New Year with a public holiday. The main celebrations take place in the Chinatown area of Port Louis. This colourful event is celebrated with fireworks to drive away evil spirits. Friends and family get together to celebrate with a parade with an abundance of food and drink.

Maha Shivaratri 🛐
Meaning "the Great Night of Shiva," this is one of the most important Hindu festivals in Mauritius. For several days, tens of thousands of pilgrims, mostly dressed in white, walk from all corners of the island to the sacred lake of Grand Bassin (Ganga Talao). They carry decorative bamboo arches ("kanwars") on their shoulders as a form of sacrifice, praying and making offerings to the god Shiva.
