Things to Do in Marrakesh in June

Tizi n'Test

here are many sites to see outside of the city if you want to escape the busy season during this time. One famous attraction outside of Marrakesh in the High Atlas Mountains is the Tizi n'Test mountain road. Built from 1926 to 1932, this magnificent road required builders to blast out sides of the mountains, creating a path that had once been considered impassable.

This 2092 metre long road is incredibly challenging for even experienced drivers but offers spectacular soaring views of the surrounding areas. Take all the necessary precautions, drive safely and use your seat belt as this road's reputation has definitely been earned.

Ouirgane

The picturesque town of Ouirgane is well worth staying overnight in as it has some excellent small hotels if you want to stay outside of the big city of Marrakesh. This village is around a 90-minute drive from the city and it is buffered by the Atlas Mountains.

If you prefer a natural break from the city, this town will offer a good respite. Its location near the mountain gives it easy access to tremendous views, paths to explore and wildlife. But because it is in the mountains, the altitude is considerably greater than Marrakesh. If you are looking to explore, you should pack water and plan to take it easy as the heat combined with the altitude can sneak up on you.

Heritage Museum

Back in the city itself, there are a number of indoor attractions to keep you occupied if you wish to escape the heat. The Heritage Museum is well worth a visit and brings Berber history and culture to life within the grounds of a beautiful Moroccan stately home. Guests particularly enjoy the addition of a refreshing mint tea on the roof terrace after exploring the exhibits. 

Dates for the diary

Many interesting festivals occur in Marrakesh during June, and they often occur indoors to escape the growing summer heat.  One popular festival is the Essaouira Gnawa and World Music Festival, held during the third week of June.

This festival hosts performances of Gnawa, or North and Western African people, that is deeply spiritual and powerful. The festival has been held for decades and earned international attention for its role in preserving Gnawan culture.
