Weather lowdown

The resort of Magaluf is located on the south west coast of Majorca, one of Spain's Balearic Islands and it is a popular destination for young holiday makers and those looking for great nightlife. While it is a party resort no matter what time of year, the cooler winter temperatures of January might deter some tourists from visiting at this time of year. Others, however, overlook the night time chill and have a great time anyway.

January is slap bang in the middle of winter and the temperatures reflect this, sitting at their lowest of the year. However, thanks to the resorts location in the Mediterranean Sea, temperatures never get too cold, and hardly ever drop below freezing. Average day time temperatures are around 9°C while lows drop to 4°C at night, so it is advisable to pack some warm layers. High temperatures can be quite pleasant in January, getting up to 14°C at times.

The sea around the resort is also rather chilly at this time of the year, with an average sea temperature of around 15°C. This is generally considered too cold to swim in comfortably and there are not many aquatic activities available at this time of year, but the resort does still have plenty to offer.

Even though temperatures are at their lowest at this time of the year, there's still a good chance that visitors will see some sunshine during their stay. January sees an average of 6 sunshine hours a day and there's a 46% chance of a sunny day. Skies are generally clear, with just a 6% chance of a cloudy day.

There is an average of only 37mm of precipitation during the month, however, there is an average of 11 days of precipitation. This means that there will be a light drizzle some of the time with a 29% chance of wet weather.

January doesn't offer the desirable sunshine and sizzling temperatures of the peak summer months and as a result, the resort is very quiet and secluded at this time of year. However, travellers looking for a quiet break and an escape from the cold weather of the UK will be able to get some great value travel deals.

Where to stay

Magaluf has a large selection of accommodation option for travellers to choose from, whether they're looking for budget or luxury accommodation. In January, hotel rooms should be at their lowest price too.

While January may not be the time to hit the beach, you can enjoy beautiful sea views at the Sol Wave House Hotel. Located right on the beach, this hotel offers easy access to the whole of the resort. This contemporary hotel has a range of cool features such as a solarium, an infinity pool and a totally unique attraction called The Waves a surf simulation pool where guests can actually ride the waves.

The Club B Hotel (formally the Fiesta Sahara Hotel) in the centre of Magaluf is particularly suited to holiday makers under 30 and provides a great place to sleep and recharge before another day or night of fun. The three star, adult only hotel is clean and comfortable and is just 250km from the beach, while on site there's a large pool. Each apartment is fully equipped with a kitchenette and an en suite bathroom. All-inclusive dining is available here.

If you're looking for a relaxing break, look no further than the Hotel Vistasol. Centrally located, this hotel is one of the most popular in Magaluf thanks to its modern rooms and range of facilities. Guests can enjoy a meal at the on-site restaurant, take a dip in the pool and unwind at the spa with Jacuzzi, sauna and Turkish bath.

Eating and drinking out

Winter in Magaluf is much quieter than the more popular tourist months, but holiday makers can still find a great meal or drink in the resort. Whether you're hankering for some delicious pub grub or a pint of something refreshing, you'll find it at Pirates Bar and Grill. This swashbuckling themed beach restaurant serves a selection of fresh, homemade barbeque fare as well as a great range of cocktails and beers in fun surroundings.

Those looking for nightlife can find it at Stereo Bar which is located at the top of the resort's famous strip. Ideal for a night out in Magaluf, this bar serves a huge choice of drinks and always has great music playing.

Finally, if you need an energy boost the morning after a late night, or just want to have lunch in stylish surroundings, head to Cappucino Cafe in nearby Palma Nova. This chain café is located all over Majorca and offers a relaxing place to enjoy a coffee or a bite to eat.

Things to do

Visitors to Magaluf in January should take advantage of the resorts indoor attractions, as the weather can be a little unpredictable.  One of the many shows in the area is called Come Fly With Me. This show is about an hour and a half long and offers a spectacular evening for all. It includes a mix of dancers, jugglers, gymnasts and aerial performers as well as swing music and performances from a Frank Sinatra impersonator. The quality of the entertainment is exceptional, not cheesy, as some tourist attractions can be. The ticket also includes champagne and snacks.

For those who want to venture out of the resort, the city of Palma makes a fantastic day trip any time of the year. Visitors can take a taxi to Palma in around 20 minutes, or travel on the bus which will get you there in under an hour. Palma is a buzzing and beautiful city all year round and a great destination for shopping and sightseeing.
