Bars and Restaurants

If you like top quality steak and amazing wines, make sure you stop by Beef and Wines. This steakhouse offers a huge selection of meat dishes, including beef, chicken, pork and lamb, as well as a small selection of fish dishes. The wine list is extensive and covers pretty much every kind of wine you can imagine.

For something a bit more local, check out Funcho Gourmet. This restaurant specialises in Portuguese cuisine and serves a wide variety of starters, mains and desserts, all of which are prepared freshly onsite. The staff here are known for being incredibly friendly and welcoming, creating a pleasant atmosphere for all diners.

If you're in the mood for a cocktail, stop by Joe's Bar. Found in the centre of Funchal, this bar serves a huge range of cocktails, as well as a selection of beers, wines and soft drinks. On top of the bar, you'll find a fabulous restaurant, renowned for their steaks.

Things to do in Madeira in June

The warm temperatures and pleasantly mild sea water make June a top month to soak up some rays at the beach. Sun worshippers will be hard pressed to find anywhere better than Prainha Beach. Situated on the easternmost point of the island, on the Ponta de São Lourenço peninsula overlooking the Atlantic and Morocco, this quiet haven is perfect for relaxing while working on your tan.

If you're a fan of panoramic views, don't miss the chance to ride the Monte Cable Car. This cable car is based in Funchal and takes visitors from the centre of the city all the way up to the top of Monte, close to the Monte Palace Tropical Garden. From the top of the cable car you can see across the whole of Funchal and way out to sea, so make sure you take your camera with you!

Instead of taking the cable car back down into Funchal, why not take a wooden toboggan? This is an incredibly fun way to get back down the mountain and is much faster than walking. Instead of a traditional snow toboggan, these toboggans are wooden garden benches with ski-style legs which are pushed down by locals dressed in traditional Madeiran clothes.

Classical music lovers won't want to miss the chance to spend an evening watching the Madeira Mandolin Orchestra. This orchestra has been successfully running for years and hosts performances at the English Church almost every Friday (June 6th, 13th, 20th and 27th in 2014). The ages of the musicians age from ten to 50 and performances only last an hour, making them suitable for couples and families alike.
