What's the Weather like in Limassol in May

May is one of the best months to visit the festive city of Limassol in Cyprus. The city is Cyprus' main seaport and has been since 1974, when the Turks invaded Famagusta, which was the main tourist resort in Cyprus. Limassol, with its numerous sandy beaches and inviting Mediterranean climate is one of the top tourist destinations in the world. May is the first month of Cyprus' long summer season. This also means that May is also the first month of the tourist season.

Temperature

The reason why many people go on holiday to Limassol in May is that the temperatures won't be as hot as other months. In fact, the month has an average temperature of 20°C, around 68°F, with highs of 24°C and lows of 16°C. As you can see, the temperatures are beautifully temperate and this is conducive for sightseeing. Crowds will also be fewer.

Rainfall

Furthermore, Limassol receives very little rainfall in May and averages only 15mm of precipitation with an average of 3 days of rainfall as the dryness of the summer months begin. This means holidaymakers won't have to adjust their touring schedules due to rainfall.

The Crowne Plaza Limassol (Promachon Eleftherias 2 Agios Athanasios) is a large-scale hotel located on the new Olympian seafront promenade. Poseidonia Beach (Amathus Area) is one of the first modern hotels built in Cyprus, and you can really notice the Greek nautical theme in the names: Aegean Coffee Shop, Neptune Ballroom, Odyssea Bar, Deity Spa, Olympus Boardroom and, of course, the Amphitrite Presidential Suite. All rooms are available with inland or sea view, equipped with A/C and heating, carpets, bathtub, satellite TV, mini fridge, and safe. Poseidonia Beach hotel also features a business center, beauty salon, boutique shops, laundry service, bike rental, beach volleyball, watersports, and tennis courts.

May is good time to explore the beaches in and around Limassol as the sea is quite warm and has an average temperature of 20°C.

Button Beach

Button Beach is south of Limassol and is a great place to wander if you want to avoid the crowds. Here you'll find the Holy Monastery of St. Nicholas of the Cats, established in 327 A.D. Legend has it that cats were first brought to rid the area of snakes theory that must have worked, for now the snakes have vanished (along with most monks and nuns) but the cats are still plentiful.

Bars and Restaurants

Risto La Piazza

Cypriot menus serve Mediterranean fare with a Turkish flair. The island's top sommeliers can be found at Risto La Piazza (Alkminis 11-12) in Paphos, an Italian restaurant that serves gnocchi with fresh cream and wild mushrooms, baked scallops, pork medallions with crispy bacon, and other mouth-watering delights.

Syrian Arab Friendship Club

The eccentrically named Syrian Arab Friendship Club (17 Vassilisis Amalias 1101 Nicosia) offers some of the finest Middle Eastern cuisine on Cyprus. Opt for the standard dishes like baba ghanoush and kibbeh, and top with mouthwatering cherry-pit flour and rosewater pudding. The drink menu is varied, from Cypriot spirits to Arab arak. Plus there's belly-dancing on the weekends, making for an entertaining evening. 

Things to Do in Limassol in May

Anthestiria Festival

Holiday-makers will be in for a treat in May as they are likely to witness the Anthestiria festival, more commonly called the flower festival. The festival was originally created to honor the Greek god Dionysus. Flowers, of all sizes, shapes and colors are paraded throughout the city during the festival.

Musical Sundays

Holidaymakers will also be able to witness Musical Sundays, which began in March and will still be going on in May. Recently more emphasis has been placed on the Music Sundays to encourage the younger generation to appreciate classical music. In Limassol, the musical festivities are held at the Municipal gardens in the mornings and evenings.

Grand Mosque

At Limassol's main square, travelers will find the Lanitis Art Foundation, with its rotating schedule of innovative exhibitions. Just around the corner is Limassol Cathedral and the palm tree-laden Grand Mosque.

Mymall

If you're a shopper, head over to Mymall, the largest shopping center on the island. You'll find everything from shoes and jewelry to ice rink and bowling alley. You can also check out the high-end department stores between Makarios Ave and Anexartisias Ave. Then spend the rest of the evening burning the midnight oil along the seafront nightclubs, karaoke bars and ice cream parlors.
