Epiphany festival

In January, holidaymakers can look forward to the Epiphany festival. It is also known as Kalanda or the festival of Lights and is one of the most important festivals to Cypriots.

Ancient traditions dictate demons appear on Christmas and spend the next two weeks playing tricks on humans. However, on January 5, Cypriots meet at the church to pray and bless the waters, which they believe holds back the demons. Priests also visit homes to cleanse them of the demons.

After this ceremony, another is held next to the sea. This is called the Blessing of the Sea. Doves are set loose into the sky and a crucifix is then thrown into the sea. It is the job of the youths to retrieve this crucifix.

These traditions may be of interest to the intrepid tourist who wishes to understand the culture and heritage of Cyprus.
