With access to thousands of years of history and culture, Lesbos is a Greek gem in the North Aegean Sea. Close to Turkey, this island, also known as Lesvos boasts luxurious resorts, pristine beaches and ancient ruins.
The summer heat continues into August in Lesbos. The temperatures rise slightly to an average of 30 degrees Celsius with a low of 21 degrees Celsius. The Aegean Sea warms up to 24 degrees Celsius, the warmest it'll be all year. In addition, the rainfall is only 4 mm for the entire month of August, but only 5 days see precipitation.
One of the most notable sights on the island of Lesbos is the Molivos Castle. The trip to the castle can be made on foot on winding, cobbled streets. Complete with a tavern at its gates and a small entrance fee, the Molivos Castle is largely in ruins. One of the better reasons to see the Castle is to make the climb and watch the sunset from atop the hill. The trip is worth the climb for the history of the island and spectacular views of the island and sunset.
In nearby Anaxos 15 minutes away by car, is the lovely restaurant of Sarandos. This quaint restaurant with outdoor seating serves classic Greek and European food for a great cost. This restaurant is family-run and it shows. The food is homemade, comes in generous portions and is served with great care.
For a family-run hotel, look no further than the Pasiphae Hotel in Skala Kallonis on the southern coast of Lesbos. Far from the other tourist resorts, this three-star hotel offers 60 comfortable rooms on grounds with gardens, a swimming pool and a short walk to the beach. The hospitality of the family owners and staff is evident in their attentive and thoughtful service.
