May is the beginning of the summer season in Lefkada. Temperatures really begin to warm up and all the tourist attractions open up as holiday makers begin to flock to the island.
Daytime temperatures reach up to around 22°C (72°F) and only fall to 14°C (57°F) in the evenings.
There is little chance of rain and the 9 hours of sunshine each day mean you will be spending a lot of time at the beach and exploring the beautiful surrounding countryside.
Porto Katsiki, once only accessible by dirt road and many steps is now much easier to get to and is well worth it for its spectacular views. The beach itself is nestled at the bottom of sheer cliffs, and the 'dragon's head' at the southern end is quite a sight to behold.
For those interested in water sports, Vassiliki Beach on the south of the island is a haven for windsurfers during the summer, with the strong afternoon wind nicknamed 'Eric' providing optimum conditions.
Nature lovers should make the short ferry trip to Meganisi Island, with its abundance of cycling and hiking trails.
However, you should take precautions to avoid suffering from sunburn and sunstroke.
Always wear sunscreen with a high enough SPF for your skin. It is also a good idea to stay out of the sun during the middle of the day, and drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
May 1st is known as Labour Day and is a national holiday all over Greece, and the 21st of the month is the Agios Konstantinos kai Agia Eleni, which celebrates the ruler Constantine and Helen, his mother.
Many festivities take place, with one of the most unusual being fire walking.
