August is the hottest month of the year in Lefkada.
With 12 hours of sunshine each day and sweltering heat, this is definitely the time of year to visit the island if you are a sun worshipper.
Daytime temperatures reach a very warm 29°C (84°F) and dip no lower than 20°C (68°F) in the evenings.
This means long, lazy days on the beach and leisurely meals at one of the many tavernas in the evenings.
Lefkada town has a wealth of restaurants and bars located in the North Harbour part of town, which also boasts beautiful views over the Ionian Sea. The speciality on most menus is locally caught fresh fish of the day.
You can take a boat tour around the bay to get a better view of the stunning coastline, and sailing enthusiasts can even hire their own yacht for a day!
There are also a variety of beaches, ranging from pebble and shingle to pure golden sand. The Santa Maura Fortress and lighthouse are also well worth a look if you are exploring this area.
Nature lovers should take a short ferry ride to the nearby Meganisi Island. Here you will find an abundance of beautiful hills to explore either on foot or by bicycle.
For exploring further afield you can take a short ferry to the island of Kefalonia. This island was the setting for the book and film 'Captain Corelli's Mandolin', and here you can explore the backdrop for yourself.
