Weather lowdown
September is the first month of the truly wet season in Langkawi. Characteristic of this period is a marked increase in rainfall and a high chance that rain will occur most days of the month. Although a significant amount of rain falls during September, daily average temperatures remain fairly constant throughout the month as is typical in tropical locations such as Langkawi.
The average temperature for the month is 27°C, this is in conjunction with an average high of 31°C and low of 23°C. While the weather may rain on your parade should you choose to visit Langkawi during September, the slightly lower average temperatures will help relieve the usually hot and sticky heat whilst the rain may also bring some respite from the high relative humidity that is expected in the region. The small size and location of Langkawi allows the temperature and weather averages to be fairly consistent regardless of where you are on the island.
Throughout the month, daily average temperatures fluctuate between 27°C and 29°C. The higher average temperatures occur during the second half of the month, with the cooler temperatures expected during the first half. The minor fluctuations in daily temperature are most likely a result a result of rain and cloudy days reducing the temperature, while the higher temperature days are likely days where there is minimal cloud coverage, allowing the local temperatures to rise slightly. 8 average hours of sunshine are to be expected each day during the month, which is normally more than enough sunshine for those hoping to spend some time soaking up the sun.
With 21 average rainfall days, 339mm of rain and a 65% chance of rain visitors to Langkawi during September should check the 14 day forecast before committing to plans that might involve being outdoors. There is a 100% chance of a cloudy day which may be a welcome feature for some. Cloudy days will lower the average daily temperature and make outdoor adventures feel slightly cooler without the sun directly beating down on you.
Expect occasional thunderstorms, especially during late afternoon/early evening. It is not uncommon to have day of rain, thunderstorms and squalls, followed the next day by clear blue skies and calm conditions. Again, it is important to check the forecast at least 1-2 days before organising activities as heavy rain can put a damper on being outdoors.
Regardless of what is happening with above ground climate conditions, a very predictable average in Langkawi is the sea temperature. Maintaining a bath-like temperature of 30°C throughout the month of September, the sea temperature surprisingly exceeds the average air temperature. Nonetheless, the ocean will leave you feeling refreshed after an afternoon dip.

Hit the beach
Pentai Cenang
Make the most of Pantai Cenang beach during the fine spells of weather. With the close proximity of many hotels and restaurants, the beach is an ideal spot during the wet season affording you the opportunity to make a short dash to your hotel, or a nearby bar or restaurant, should the weather suddenly turn. An umbrella may come in use as both rain and sun protection (you can still get sun burn during the wet season in Langkawi!). There are several beach activities that beach goers can hire (such as kayaks), allowing you to do some exploring of the area. Remember, squalls often occur during the wet season. These weather phenomenon's can bring sudden gusts of wind and heavy rain therefore if you are kayaking in marginal weather, try to remain observant of the weather.
Eating and Drinking Out
Restoran Siti Fatimah
Close to the Kampun Tok Senik Resort, Restoran Siti Fatimah offers fresh and cheap local food that is popular with locals. During lunchtime, the restaurant is also very popular with tourists. The best time to go is before midday as the food is fresh and the restaurant is not over crowded. By 1pm, the restaurant is usually at its busiest and finding a table / getting served can be quite a task.
Mangoes Bar & Grill
A hidden gem that is very close to the airport in Padang Matsirat, Mangoes Bar & Grill is one of the few places in Langkawi that serves up Bacon (pork). So if the bacon cravings have kicked in on your holiday, you now know where to go! Mangoes serves up a Western Style menu, and is frequented by expats, locals and tourists. Ocean and garden views from the restaurant, overlook the Andaman Sea and the mango trees which aptly give the restaurant its name. The restaurant and bar is open from 17:00 daily, so be sure to call in for dinner, complemented by lovely sea views as the sun sets.
Things to do
Malaysia Fest
The Ramadan Bazaar is one of the most acclaimed September events in Langkawi. The food bazaars will be full with people from the Muslim community selling different types of traditional foods. Another event of interest is the Malaysia Fest in late September; the celebration is all about visiting the region's shopping malls, restaurants, and identifying and exploring the country's rich culture and delicious cuisine options. Make sure to check the forecast and dress appropriately you do not want to be caught out in the rain!
Langkawi Underwater World
For the greyer weather days when the sun is hidden behind cloud cover with perhaps some rain, the Langkawi Underwater World is an indoor attraction that will easily take up half of your day. The attraction is one of the largest Aquariums in S.E Asia. Popular with families, children (and adults) will be fascinated by the experience of walking through the aquarium tunnel, with teams of aquatic sea life visible. The aquarium also features other attractions including a "Penguinarium", as well as a shopping centre and café.
