Weather lowdown
October is part of the wet season in Langkawi. In fact, it is expected to be the wettest month of the year. An average of 26 rain days deliver an astounding 344mm of rain to the Island. This excess of rain brings many benefits to the islands farms and industries that rely on water however, it can also cause widespread flooding in low lying areas. The cloud that blankets the island during this time gives rise to a 99% chance of a cloudy day throughout the month. If you plan to travel around the island during October, take a spare change of clothes with you, in case you are caught out in a rain shower and do not wish to spend the rest of the day in wet clothes.
Temperatures during October are similar to other months of the year, albeit on the lower end of the scale of averages. The average temperature is 27°C throughout October. Highs expected during this time reach 31°C with the lows dropping to 23°C. You can expect these high and low temperatures to occur during the Midday and early morning periods, respectively. Whilst these temperatures are comparatively low for the island, expect to spend most days wearing minimal/light clothing to aid keeping cool during the warmer daylight hours and also during the evening if your accommodation does not offer in room air conditioning.
Langkawi's geographic location and form mean there is little variation between weather and climate at different parts of the island. The daily average temperature ranges from 27°C to 29°C throughout the month of October. For the most part, average daily temperatures remain at 28°C. The coolest day (27°C) in October is experienced on the 5th of the month, with the warmest days (29°C) occurring later on in the month on the 27th and 29th. With the minimal temperature variation throughout the month, the temperature conditions do not favour particular periods of October to visit Langkawi. There is however, less rain expected in the following month of November and so if you were considering visiting Langkawi in October; the latter half of the month may offer slightly drier conditions than the first half, as the wet season comes to an end.
With an expected 7 hours of sunshine per day during October, sunshine hours during this month are at the lower end of the scale, as compared to the rest of the year. With the high chance of rain and cloudy conditions, you should be prepared to spend some days indoors or partaking in activities that are covered, if you wish to avoid getting wet.
Swimming in the ocean is possible all year round in Langkawi, thanks to the warm ocean temperatures. Average sea temperatures for Langkawi during October are 29°C. The warm sea temperature allows most people to spend an entire day at the beach, in the water, without feeling any ill effects such as being cold. The cooler waters can trick the unsuspecting people who may not appreciate the amount of sun they are receiving whilst relaxing in the sea. It is important that if spending time in the sea, even on cloudy days as are predicted in October, that sun protection be used so as to avoid sun burn.
