Weather lowdown
When identifying the wet and dry seasons/months in Langkawi, May is the first month of the year to show an obvious increase in rain and rain days, as compared to the previous months. A relatively high 256mm of rain, accompanied by 17 rainfall days during the month, allows the dry-vs-wet days expected during the month to be slightly in favour of wet days. If you are planning on spending time outdoors during May, prepare a schedule that involves a variety of options to allow for weather. It is also worth checking the forecast to be sure of daily conditions.
The average daily high temperature in Langkawi reaches 32°C during May, with the average daily low dipping to 24°C. The high temperatures are generally expected early afternoon, with the cooler lower evening temperatures aiding sleeping guests and locals who may not have the benefit of room air conditioning. A daily average temperature of 28°C is expected throughout the month. This is a slight dip from April, reflecting the cooler temperatures of the wet season.
The daily average temperatures are very predictable for the month of May, so far as being consistently 29°C for the entire month, with the exception of one day. The one day in question is the 10th of May, with a slightly increased average temperature of 30°C. One would expect cloud and rain to increase as the month proceeds, a result of the approaching wet season. May is a part of the mid-season transition, between the wet and dry seasons.
Typical of tropical islands, despite the ever increasing threat of rain Langkawi still sees plenty of sun. Sunshine hours average at 8 hours per day. A 98% chance of a cloudy day, and 59% chance of rainfall is expected, and therefore should be planned for accordingly. Bear in mind tropical weather can be very unpredictable at times, with heavy showers or downpours of rain appearing, and disappearing almost as suddenly.
If you don't mind the thought of spending some days under cover (or if you don't mind a little bit of rain, swimming while it's raining can also be an enjoyable experience!), May's average sea temperature is a comfortable 30°C. The warm sea temperatures allows comfortable swimming conditions regardless of the sunshine/rain state. You run a higher risk of feeling cool being out of the water, sitting in the rain, rather than swimming in the ocean!
If you prefer a 'drier' holiday, and wish to avoid the tourist busy season, consider visiting Langkawi a month earlier in April, when weather conditions are a little more stable and predictable.

Bear in mind there are no restaurants or hotels along this stretch of beach, and so water (and/or food) should be brought with you.
There are also no public toilet/shower facilities. Rain or shine, the sea is inviting it may be worth noting that on days with particularly heavy rain, the ocean isnot be as crystal clear as one may expect, this is a result of rivers carrying sediment down to the ocean and mixing with the sea water. If you are not a fan of swimming in anything less than crystal clear water on rainy days, you may wish to consider an alternative way to spend your day!
Eating and Drinking Out
Nam Restaurant
Nam Restaurant can be found in Pantai Cenang, within the Bon Ton Resort. The Western and Eastern styled menu with Asian spices is popular with travellers. The restaurant is open from 11am to 11pm, offering lunch or dinner options. Undercover seating as is provided at Nam Restaurant is important as the risk of rain at this time of year can turn the experience of outdoor dining from a pleasant one to a very wet one.
Privilege Restaurant and Bar
Privilege Restaurant and Bar, located in Pantai Kok's Telaga Harbour Park is a popular night spot for those seeking Malaysian/Indian fusion cuisine. Menu items range from curries to steaks to seafood, all prepared with a mouth-watering mix of spices and herbs. A popular spot for couples who may enjoy the modern furnishings, elegant décor and atmosphere, helping create a romantic dinner setting for your holiday.
Things to do
Hiking
If you're a hiking and trekking enthusiast, then be sure to incorporate Langkawi's amazing waterfalls in your walkabouts. The weather conditions in Spring are ideal, as the rainfall will ensure the rivers are flowing sufficiently to create remarkable waterfalls, whilst not being too wet that it makes the track to the waterfalls difficult to access.
Temurun Waterfalls
The Temurun waterfalls are situated in the Cincang Nature Park of Datai, and are truly spectacular. The fresh water that comes from the mountains forms a 30m cascade that's simply breath-taking, so don't forget your camera! Some other waterfalls worth visiting are Telaga Tujuh Waterfalls and Durian Perangin Falls.
Wilderness Langkawi Challenge
When it comes to events, the Wilderness Langkawi Challenge takes place in May. The challenging event gathers participants from all around the world looking to put their fitness to the test. The event includes various competitions such as kayaking, racing, mountain-biking, running, and more. Make sure you come prepared, an umbrella may be useful when spectating events should you wish to stay dry or need some shade.
