Weather Lowdown
January is one of the warmer, drier months of the year for Langkawi. During this month, the daily average high temperature for the island edges up to the 33°C mark during the day, with a relatively pleasant 23°C expected during the cooler evening hours. An overall monthly average of 28°C gradually increases throughout the month, peaking during one of the warmest months of the year, February. At this time of year, expect very little cloud coverage and a low probability of rainfall during the day with the odd, short-lived downpour occurring during late afternoons/evenings. Due to the relatively small size of Langkawi Island, there is minimal temperature difference observed between different parts of the island.
Early January, the daily average temperature alternates semi-daily, between 28°C and 29°C, this daily average then plateaus at 29°C between the 2nd week of January and 3rd week of January. Between the 24th and the 31st of January, the daily average temperature alternates between 29°C and 30°C. The coolest daily averages of January are experienced during the first week of January, with the warmest averages experienced during the last week.
The dry season in Langkawi occurs between December and April and during this month rainfall is scarce with an average of 50mm, and only 9 rain days expected in January. Daily sunshine averages at a respectable 8 hours per day. Lots of sunshine and minimal rain present you the best opportunity to get out and about exploring, or simply lazing around at the beach.
The probability of rainfall decreases throughout the month of January, during the lead up to the driest month of the year, February. Most rain that does occur during this period is short lived downpours, these tend to occur in the late afternoon/early evening and very rarely extend beyond a few hours of rain, so even when you encounter rain it will not disrupt your trip too much.
Average sea temperatures in Langkawi do not fluctuate to a high degree. An average sea temperature of 29°C is expected in January and will offer some degree of relief from the relatively higher air temperature so swimming will be enjoyable. By comparison to the rest of the year, January's average sea temperature is similar to that experienced between October and March.
