Weather lowdown

August is the last month of the mid-season period, and as the month goes on a steadily increasing frequency and quantity of rain is observed. With this increase in rain, a decrease in daily average temperature also occurs. At 28°C, the daily average temperature is slightly higher than that experienced in months either side of August (July and September). In the greater scheme of things, August's average temperature in Langkawi, as compared to the rest of the year, is moderate.

Peak averages for the month reach a high of 31°C, enough to give most people a permanent sweat make sure you keep up your intake of fluids, dehydration and sun stroke are still very easy to come by. Average daily low temperatures fall to a relatively mild 24°C, usually after sunset.

The daily average temperature shows a slight downward trend as the month passes. Highest daily averages are expected during the first half of the month (29°C), whilst the coolest daily averages are experienced during the latter half (27°C). Remember, the cooler temperatures are associated with increased cloud and rain as the month concludes, therefore, whilst some may assume it is better to visit the island in the latter half of the month to benefit from the slightly more comfortable temperatures, the expectation should also be to have more cloud and rain during this time as well. Despite these expectations, Langkawi still has an average 8 hours of average sunshine per day, throughout the month.

A 99% chance of a cloudy day, and 59% chance of rainfall, present you a good opportunity to get out and about exploring, with relatively milder day time temperatures offering you some relief from direct sunlight. Rain during August can be either short bursts, or longer drawn out showers. It therefore may also be wise to consider planning indoor or sheltered activities if visiting Langkawi during August to avoid being caught out in the rain. August has an average rainfall of 249mm, and 18 rain days expected throughout the month.

Despite the cooler air temperatures, average sea temperatures in Langkawi remain steady at 30°C. Year round warm sea temperatures permit the ability to swim during all seasons, and at any time of day. The increased rainfall during the wet season does however affect the clarity of the ocean with the increased level of river deposits that occur. Therefore, snorkelling and diving close to the main island may not have favourable sea clarity conditions during and immediately after periods of heavy rain.
