Weather lowdown
April is a mid-season month, between the dry and wet seasons. April marks the beginning of this transitional period, with weather conditions that reflect this change. The average temperature for Langkawi, in April is 29°C.
The average high temperature for April in Langkawi, is a sweltering 34°C. A great majority of days averaging temperatures close to 34°C can be expected earlier on in the month. As the month progresses, average daily temperatures will reduce in relation to the increased amount of cloud and rainfall, signifying the approaching wet season. The average daily low temperature is 24°C for the month, with this temperature expected typically during evening hours.
There is not a great deal of daily temperature variation between the beginning and end of April. A consistent 29°C is expected for the great majority of the month, with two days (the 5th and 8th of April) having a slightly higher temperature of 30°C. Therefore, it can be said that the latter half of April is ever so slightly cooler as compared to the first half. Nonetheless, these are similar conditions to the previous months of the year. For example, sunshine hours remain solid at 9 per day.
During the mid-season period rainfall is mild at times with spells of dry weather between. An average rainfall of 169mm is expected to fall on approximately 14 days throughout this month (roughly 50%). Despite the increased rain, expect to see plenty of blue sky on most days.
As is often the case in Langkawi, and most tropical regions, late afternoon showers and the odd thunderstorm should be expected. These can usually be observed building up just after the hottest part of the day, followed by a period of high humidity, before the heavens open and rain showers (ranging in intensity from light to heavy) bring some much needed relief and cooling to the high temperature/humidity conditions.
Swimming in Langkawi is possible, rain or shine, thanks to the consistently warm ocean temperatures courtesy of the Islands location and close proximity to the Equator. Average sea temperatures in April are 30°C, slightly higher than the earlier months of the year, however, the temperature change is very barely noticeable and does not affect your ability to take a refreshing swim in the ocean at any one of the many beaches around the island.

Hit the beach
Tanjung Rhu Beach
If you would like to get away from the busy tourist beaches (Pantai Cenang and Pantai Tengah), consider a drive up to the North Eastern Tip of the island where you will find Tanjung Rhu Beach. This picturesque stretch of white sand is arguably the prettiest beach in Langkawi. Stalls and shops are located throughout the villages on the way to Tanjung Rhu, however, you will not find a large selection of bars and restaurants on the beach, as compared to the other tourist hotspot beaches.
There is some driving and searching involved to make your way there, however, the result will be well worth the effort. The beach is secluded and the April weather should allow you some very impressive sunset views. The shallow water makes this beach ideal for families with children.

Things to do
Langkawi International Water Festival
Held during mid-April, Langkawi International Water Festival provides plenty of 'water-themed' fun for all ages. The majority of the festival takes place at Pantai Kok (Telaga Harbour Park) as well as Pantai Cenang. Some of the events include Kayak Racing, sand castle building and a fishing competition. April weather is ideal for this particular festival, providing participants and spectators with a good balance between sun and cloud cover.
Langkawi International Festival of Art
The Langkawi International Festival of Art takes place in early April. The celebration features various workshops and exhibitions held throughout the island. There are some outdoor activities, so bear in mind there is a slight chance you may need an umbrella if you wish to keep dry from any rain. The umbrella may equally come in handy should it be a sunny day, offering you some shady relief whilst walking between events and exhibitions.
