Weather lowdown
The Lombardy region of Italy is home to the world famous Italian Lake District and one of the most popular destinations, Lake Como. The huge, Y-shaped lake is located in the north of Italy, just 45km from the city of Milan. With a mild Mediterranean climate and beautiful, European-style architecture, it is no wonder that the lake is a popular getaway for the rich and famous.
May is a great time to visit Lake Como as the spring season really gets going and the sun shine is in abundance. May is one of the best months for sun-worshippers to head on over to Lake Como with 11 hours of sunshine each day on average. Whenever you visit through the month there will be a good chance you will see plenty of sunshine, so make sure you bring plenty of sun cream if you're visiting Lake Como in May.
The sun brings with it an increase in temperatures, as May sees a pleasant, but not uncomfortable average temperature of 16°C compared to April's 12°C. Highs can even reach a balmy 20°C in May, but cool winds from the lake will ensure it never feels too stuffy. Temperatures will drop on a night in Lake Como, but not too much. Average low temperatures are around 12°C, so you shouldn't feel too cold on an evening.
Unfortunately for some, May is known to be one of the wettest month of the year in the Lake Como area. In an average year, 128mm of rain will fall and there will be 16 wet days out of 31, so visitors to the region during May should pack a raincoat.
If you don't mind the odd shower or two, May is a fantastic time to visit Lake Como. The wonderful lake and mountain vistas and the glorious sunshine more than makes up for the wet days.
