Lake Como is the third largest lake in Italy, shaped like an inverted "Y" located between Milan and the Southern border of Switzerland and the Alps. This exclusive destination has become a residence for Hollywood movie stars such as George Clooney and Sylvester Stallone.

There's plenty going on all around Lake Como whether you're into sightseeing, taking in the culture or into water sports. Cycling, hiking and horse riding are great ways to get around the surrounding area, and whilst you are here you must go and see some of the luxurious villas spotted around the lakeside, one of the most famous being Villa del Balbianello which has featured in many blockbuster movies.

If you fancy visiting all the different towns and villages scattered around the lake you can hop on one of the many ferries which frequently visit the most popular locations such as Bellagio and Varenna. Or another exciting way to get around is the cable car in Argegno which takes you up to the village of Pigra.

Natural attractions

If you want to discover Lake Como's natural offerings there's plenty of gardens and parks to visit or why not take a ferry to Comacina Island.

You must first cross the lake to reach Comacina Island, which is in fact the only remote Island in the whole of Lake Como. This small island has played a predominant part in the history of the area from the Roman era to the early Medieval Ages.  For a relaxing day out head to La Punta Spartivento in Bellagio, which overlooks the Swiss Alps and the area of Menaggio and Varenna. This romantic park is the perfect place to go for a picnic with your partner.

Horse riding

Horse riding is a great way to discover Lake Como's hidden treasures; there are also riding schools which specialise in dressage and show jumping for more experienced riders.

Ranch El Picadero provides riding tours all year round through the surrounding mountains of Valtellina and Chiavenna, but you don't have to worry if you are a beginner as they cater for all riding abilities. Or why not trek through the natural reserves in the Northern Sorico area with Equestrian Centre Del Lario. But if you are more into competitive horse riding such as dressage or show jumping head to Il Sagittario in Tavernerio for world class tuition from Giorgia Gotti.

Golf

Some of Italy's finest golf courses can be found round the area of Lake Como, Milan and Bergamo.

Villa D'este Golf Course is the closest to Como. This stunning and elite course was designed by Peter Gannon and is considered to be one of the most challenging par 69 courses in Europe. Carimate is situated in the verdant area Brianza, famous for its tranquillity and picturesque landscape. Not only is there an 18-hole course here, but you can also practice on the driving range or relax at the end of the day in the outdoor swimming pool.

La Pinetina simply means "pine forest" and this is a rather big clue of what to expect when arriving here. This is a highly modern golf course equipped with a driving range, pitch & putt and a video recording area so you can analyse your swings. Whilst Menaggio & Cadenebbia Golf Club prides itself on being one of the oldest courses in Europe. This 18-hole golf club is designed like a traditional British course so you will not feel far from home playing here.

Walking & hiking

The best way to discover Lake Como is probably on foot. There are many trails which weave through the breathtaking landscapes and historical structures around the lake.

Greenway del Lago di Como  is a specially constructed path which stretches over 10km through the main towns of Como including Colonno, Lenno and Mezzegra. Along the trail you will be able to spot Roman ruins and elegant villas such as Villa il Balbiano and Villa Carlotta.

Cycling & mountain biking

The Lake Como area is a haven for cyclists as the roads are very quiet and surrounded by beautiful rolling mountains.

For cycling enthusiasts Lake Como Cycling specialises in road and mountain biking tours in Cernobbio by the Swiss Alps. This is also the same area where Tour de France winner Cadel Evans lives and trains before competing.

Como Lago Bike offers a range of taxing cycling tours through the hidden valleys and steep mountains Lake Como has to offer. But if you would rather cycle alone there is the option to hire road bikes or have a private guided tour with an Italian ex-pro. If you are more into cycling off road and exploring the rough terrain Como has to offer you can hire or take a tour with the Cavalcario Club along Bellagio's mountains.

Water sports

Lake Como is a paradise for fans of water sports with a wide variety of activities to choose from such as wind surfing and water-skiing.

Located in Gera Lario, the windiest part of Lake Como is the Tabo Surf Centre. This well equipped water sports school offers lessons and summer camps in windsurfing, kite surfing, wake boarding and sailing. But if you would rather stay ashore they also have basketballs courts and beach volleyball to keep you entertained.

The calm waters of Lake Como provide excellent conditions for rowing. Bellagio Water Sports sits at Pescallo Harbour and offers a fleet of kayaks suitable for all abilities. You will be guided through the picturesque coasts of Bellagio and Varenna by an expert, or there is the option to rent out a kayak to discover the natural beauty spots Como has to offer.

If you're daring enough to explore Italy's beautiful granite gorges, there's the opportunity to go canyoning in Val Bodengo. Val Bodengo Canyoning and Mountain Sports Zillertal both offer guided tours along the spectacular ridges and lagoons for beginners and experienced mountaineers, but you must be aware this is not an activity for the faint hearted. Whilst if you want to explore the depths of Lake Como head to Sub Como which provides courses for all abilities in learning how to dive and using the equipment correctly.

Sailing

Sailing is a very popular activity on Lake Como for both locals and tourists, particularly in the Northern region as the wind tends to be stronger here. Many regatta competitions are also held here such as the Hobie Sailing Championships.

For those who are sailing enthusiasts you can choose from a variety of sailing boats at Tabo Surf to hire. They also provide private lessons and group courses for both adults and children. Or there's Skiff sailing which provides courses specialised in skiff sailing, or why not have a go at kite and windsurfing here.

If you have a need for speed Lake Como Boats hires out open motor boats for up to six people, but there is also the option to rent out a dinghy boat for the day.

Historic sites

There are many exclusive villas and ancient monasteries of historical interest scattered throughout Lake Como.

The stunning Villa del Balbianello was reconstructed into a villa and lodge in the late 18th century by Cardinal Durini. Set in a romantic location by the lake with beautiful terraced gardens, this secluded bit of a paradise has featured in many blockbuster movies such as Star Wars and Casino Royale.

Villa Carlotta is a magnificent palace set in botanical gardens completed at the end of the 17th century. You can spend hours marvelling at the gardens, which are said to contain over 500 species of flowers and plants, or you may choose to attend one of the classical concerts held here.

Como's most significant place of worship is Como Cathedral, located in the city of Como. This Gothic Roman Catholic Cathedral has a beautiful interior, including tapestries and a golden-plated dome. Located in Bellagio is I Gardini di Villa Melzi, these well kept gardens stretch along the lakeshore and house a villa, chapel and historical museum.

The Abbey of Piona sits upon the hill of Olgiasco in the town of Colico. This unspoilt monastery dates back to the early middle ages and is known for its charm and peaceful atmosphere. Another place to visit with breathtaking beauty and a tranquil setting is Villa Monastero. This patrician villa and ancient monastery is surrounded by botanical gardens and evergreen trees by the lakeside.

In the area of Perledo is Castle of Vezio. Enjoy making your way through the ruins and climb up the spiralling tower to see the breathtaking view of Lake Como below, or why not go to one of the falconry demonstrations held in the grounds.

Museums

There are a few museums around Lake Como where you can learn more about the history of Italy and Como.

For motorbike enthusiasts you can't afford to miss Museum Moto Guzzi situated in Mandello del Lario. This museum is completely dedicated to the history of the Moto Guzzi motorbike brand. In total there are over 150 exhibition pieces of prototypes, sports bikes, motorbikes and engines.

The archaeological Museum Paolo Giovio is dedicated to ancient Roman history and the spread of the Latin language.   Make your way through mosaics and remarkable weapons or take a look in the Egyptian room. Whilst if you are more into sports why not visit Museo del Ciclismo located in Madonna Del Ghisallo, a haven for cyclists.

Theme Parks

Lake Como may have a reputation as being marketed towards adults, but in fact the area has a lot to offer for the little ones too.

A great day out with the kids is a trip to Jungle Raider Park, situated in a conifer forest in the town of Margno. Take your pick from obstacle courses, zip lines, tandem paragliding and breathtaking bob runs. Or if your children are animal lovers visit the Cornelle Zoo in Valbrembo, Bergamo, which holds 100 species of birds, mammals and reptiles. Don't forget to look out for the alligators of the Mississippi River or the White Rhinos.

If you don't mind venturing out a bit further the MiniItalia Amusement Park in Bergamo has a great choice of activities and amusements to choose from including pirate rides, water rapids and an aquarium. Or you could try the California Aqua Park located just across the Swiss border in Chiasso. Whilst your kids enjoy the fun water park you can sit back and relax by the pool or relax in the spa.
