Kyrenia is a coastal town located in the northern region of Cyprus. The resort has a lot to offer tourists and has long been a top holiday destination. Apart from the beautiful scenery and lovely beaches, Kyrenia is well known for its historic harbour and castle and enjoys a favourable Mediterranean climate. Vakiflar or Lara beach is a private beach is about 3km east of the town of Vyrsi. It is a pleasant, quiet beach popular with British tourists. Onsite facilities include toilets, showers and restaurants.

Tasmahzen Restaurant is a casual restaurant with a fine selection of mezze, kebabs and kofte. The service is low-key and friendly, and maintained by a single family. Try the mouth-watering Cypriot fare like lamb's liver.

Benoz's

Benoz's signature dish is the swordfish cutlet must-try for all patrons. The organic and fresh dishes and supplied by fish caught that morning and the restaurant's garden. The food is delicious and the service friendly but not too intrusive.

Things to Do in Kyrenia in January

St. Hilarion Castle

One of Kyrenia's must-visit attractions includes St. Hilarion Castle, an ancient architectural site and prime photo opportunity. The former monastery was built in the 10th century and is located on the Kyrenia mountain range. It's one of three former strongholds in the area. Saint Hilarion, along with nearby castles Buffavento and Kantara, was the defence of the island against Arab pirates. Captured by Richard the Lionheart during the Third Crusade, some say it served as the inspiration of Disney's Sleeping Beauty castle. Its steep, 3,000-ft climb is well-worth the sensational view.

Kyrenia Castle

At Kyrenia Castle, you can catch an impressive and gruesome display of waxwork mannequins. The theme is torture and imprisonment, so be prepared to see waxwork torturers, guards and prisoners dressed in loincloths. Now complete with replicas of traditional torture devices.

Diving

Kyrenia also offers great diving experiences in the deep waters of the Mediterranean Sea. There are some spectacular dive sites to enjoy and a number of PADI approved dive schools.
