Weather Lowdown
You could consider May to be the month when things change a little in terms of the weather in Kuredu, in fact in terms of the weather in the Maldives overall. We know that the region is influenced by two different monsoon seasons, and May is the changeover month to a certain degree. You will notice a few weather pointers which tell you that slightly more changeable weather is on the way, and the main one is probably the fact that rainfall can occasionally be a little more prominent, with around 15 days of the month affected by rain to some degree that is half of the month to make that point clearer.
One thing which barely changes however is the air temperature, and this month experiences an average of 29°C throughout the month, which can reach a high of 31°C during the hotter times of the day. Evenings are still mild and warm, at 26°C, meaning air conditioning will be needed in your accommodation for a more comfortable night's sleep. Humidity can also be a little higher at this time of year, falling into the 'very high' bracket now slightly wetter conditions have arrived.
The sun never really goes away despite the change in season, and you can expect around 7 hours of sunshine per day throughout this month. The Indian Ocean is also very inviting, with an average water temperature of 30°C, reflecting the air temperature, and making beach time a must during your holiday. This is one of the best months in terms of water temperature, so be sure to make the most of it by diving, snorkelling, swimming, or enjoying water-sports. You will find plentiful excursions heading out into open water for fishing and diving, so this is a consideration for an activity whilst you are away.
Where to Stay
Despite the fact that the weather temperature never really changes too much, even in May, staying in slightly cooler surroundings, perhaps in the shade of beautiful gardens, will give you some respite from the plentiful sun. Kuredu Island Resort Hotel & Spa offers an accommodation option called Bonthi Garden Bungalows, and these are within the more affordable bracket of places to stay within the resort.
Located just behind the very luxurious O Beach Villas within the resort, in the north east of the island, these bungalows are close to the main facility centre, but are quiet enough to offer a peaceful backdrop, perfect for relaxation. You will find spacious accommodation, a furnished veranda to relax on, as well as all the amenities you need to give you a truly chilled out holiday.
If you don't want to stay in the main resort, then around 25km away from Kuredu itself you will find Sun Siyam Iru Fushi Luxury Resort Maldives. This is a highly recommended place to stay, which is five star rated, and located on nearby Noonu.
Here you will find beach villas which have ample space for relaxation, as well as an infinity pool overlooking the ocean, and the on-site Spa by Thalgo France, where you can enjoy massages and treatments to up the ante in terms of relaxation.
What to Do
We know that the island of Kuredu is inhabited by one large hotel resort, and whilst you will find more than everything you need, sometimes you might just feel the need to get away. In that case, grab your adventurer's hat and head to Male. You will need to take the seaplane, and the distance between the two is around 250 miles or so, however May is the ideal time to go. Despite this, you can easily do this visit in a day or two, so perhaps book an overnight hotel to truly get the most out of it.
Male has plenty to see and do, as well as showing you some of the local culture and life, which you probably won't see much of when you're in the middle of a large tourist resort.
Male Fish Market is a great place to head for traditions, and you can grab some fresh catch to enjoy for your dinner if you fancy cooking up a storm. Alternatively, the National Museum will show you the history and cultures of the Maldives overall, and will help you understand the rich traditions which run through this beautiful part of the world. The Grand Friday Mosque is another important place to visit in Male, and one which is sombre and beautiful. Don't miss the Tsunami Monument, and pay your respects to those affected by this terrible weather occurrence which unfortunately can occasionally happen in this part of the world.
If you can get over to Male, it should certainly be done, as it will complete your holiday, showing you Maldivian ways you won't get to see when you stay on Kuredu itself.
Island hopping is another activity which is hugely popular and will again show you a different viewpoint on the area. The fact that each large island is inhabited by one large hotel means that you don't really get to see too much other than your actual resort, so hopping gives you the chance to experience more than one island, with great ease. It's a good idea to go with a booking company for this, basically to make the whole thing much easier. Check out Experience Travel Group for some great itineraries.
Hit the Beach
Palm Beach Resort & Spa has its own private beach on the island of Naifaru. This stunning island is just as idyllic as Kuredu itself, and the thatched cottages which line the beach give it that paradise feel we have come to expect from the Indian Ocean islands.
You do need to be a guest to use the full facilities of the hotel's beach, but day passes for facilities are available if you call ahead and book for a charge. This is a great way to experience a different beach day to the one you will be used to in your main resort hotel in Kuredu.
The beach itself is literal castaway white sand, blue sea, swaying palms, and a cloudless blue sky above you. Bliss!
Restaurants and Nightlife
Within the main resort's main entertainment area you will find Bonthi Restaurant, a buffet affair which has every kind of cuisine you can ever imagine. This is the allocated restaurant for those guests staying in the Bonthi Beach and Garden Bungalows, however guests can visit with reservation.
This restaurant often has themed nights, so check out the entertainment programme during your visit, however this is a lively affair regardless of the day you head there, so it is great for a vibrant night out with great food.
If you're looking for a bar to sit and while away the hours, then check out Sangu Bar. This has a romantic vibe, and is situated near to the wedding chapel, so is great for spending time with a special someone. Guests must be aged 18 and over to visit this bar.
