The month of June is the perfect time to visit Kruger National Park in South Africa. Marking the area's wintertime, now is when most of the park's wildlife will be out and about in search of food and water. This is Kruger's coldest month with temperatures sitting around 26C in the daytime and 6C at night.
The park will be crowded at this time of year with tourists flocking from across the world to get their 'big five' fix, so beeline to the north of the park for a bit more peace and quiet. If you like getting truly back to nature, give the backpack trails a go. The Mphongolo Backpacking Trail lasts for 4 days and 3 nights and is suitably basic. This trail lies between the Shingwedzi and Mphongolo rivers, in the wilderness, and the groups are intimate with a maximum of 8 people per trail. If you're not the type to sleep in the wilderness, then make sure to stick to the guided walks in the morning and in the afternoon.
As far as accommodation goes, you can choose to sleep at the Crocodile Kruger Safari Lodge, where you can cook your own food to save some money. This location is 25km away from the park, so ideal if you want to explore a different area.
