Africa offers many ideal locations for the discerning, intrepid and adventure seeking traveller. If a once in a lifetime safari experience is what you're after, then it doesn't get much better than Kruger in South Africa. This park is one of the biggest in Africa, offering game viewing as the main attraction. The surface area of the park is of 7,523 sq mi or 19,485 sq km, and it's the first park in South Africa to become a recognised national park. Safari means 'a long journey' and for many people, Kruger offers the perfect place to embark on a journey of a lifetime.
Kruger National Park its correct denomination - is also an International Man and Biosphere Reserve, and has nine entrance gates offering access to the resting camps. For many people January is a cold, snowy month, but in South Africa the average temperature for this month is 27C (or 80F), making it the hottest month of the year. Kruger right now can reach 32C, and won't drop below 21C.
The weather lends itself to pleasant conditions, however, due the park's wildlife seeking respite from the heat in the shade of any suitable vegetation - in addition to the vast expanse of the park - spotting the big animals most people hope to see while on safari, is certainly not guaranteed.
The park offers many different types of lodging, all designed to meet the needs of being on safari. Some options include self catering while others include all meals, look around and you'll find some great packages.
If you prefer wildlife over fellow man, avoid the south of the park, and visiting at weekends and over the school breaks. Visitors can book various trails across Kruger, safe in the knowledge that a local guide will accompany them. Be sure to sign up for a bush walk to spot wildlife your better off going early in the morning. A number of the bush walks include camps, too, for instance Satara and Skukuza.
