What's the weather like in Kotor in August

The last month of summer is as glorious as its predecessor, July, with sunshine galore, near perfect levels of heat and clear blue waters to soak in.

Temperature

The average temperature is a beautiful 26°C, with the hotter days expected to reach an average high of 31°C (88°F). The nights are still cool and refreshingly pleasant at 18°C, with plenty of nocturnal breezes to cool you down. Humidity is at its lowest point in the entire year, measuring an average of 45% with loose dew points which maintain a dry but fresh air all across the bay area.

Sunshine Hours

The days are slightly shorter, with up to 9 hours of uninterrupted sunshine per day, and chances of clear blue skies are still very high and optimistic for the end of the summer season.

Rainfall

Chances of rain are still quite low, with a slightly increased rainfall volume measuring up to 58mm on average, spread over a total of 5 days in the month. This means that the rain sessions will be scarce, but a bit more consistent than in the previous month. However, with the high temperatures expected for August, whatever happens, the heat will quickly dry it all up.

Wind

The winds have toned down by now, and average speeds of 50kmh are expected to populate the Riviera, most of them dry southern winds sneaking in from the African shoreline, as well as southern Italy.

Sea Temperature

The sea temperature is a glorious 25°C (77°F), making it perfect for swimming, diving and snorkelling, despite the absence of fine sandy beaches that most people are so accustomed to. Be mindful of the sun though, and don't disregard the importance of SPF lotions, as the unprotected skin will suffer from overexposure. Also, as is always the case with hot summer days, make sure you are well hydrated as well.

Kotor Beaches in August

As previously mentioned, Kotor doesn't have any extravagant and fine sandy beaches. In many parts even the seabed is rough and rocky. But the water is always crystal clear, shallow and warm, and with its August temperature it's pretty much near perfect. One excellent beach to spend your days while in Kotor is Zhukova Beach, a little valley that's part of the Donji Grbalj village, surrounded by numerous other smaller fjords. Its surrounded by pristine and virgin maquis forests, and its gently slopes into the sea. It's a pebbled beach, stretching for roughly 200m and relatively narrow, but the views that it offers from dawn until dusk and even at night are simply unforgettable.

Bars and Restaurants

There is a rustic eatery in the Old Town that is simply perfect for anyone wishing to get a taste of authentic Montenegrin cuisine. They're best known for their phenomenal lobster, mussels and fresh fish specialities, including the barbecued zurbatak lavishly caressed with olive oil and simply served with a couple of lemon wedges. You see, the talented chefs of Konoba Scala Santa believe in the undeniable charm of simplicity, focusing on laborious preparation and obtaining the perfect taste instead. The atmosphere also has a romantic tone to it, with candle-lit tables and wood beams running across the ceiling, decorated with fishing tools, and a generous fireplace.

If you've had enough of all the little eateries and cafes that flank almost every corner of every cobblestone alleyway in the Old Town of Kotor, you can either let loose over a few spirited drinks at the popular Hacienda Club. Its tropical décor, with swinging lounge chairs and boldly coloured cushions, this venue is perfect for both daytime and night time frolics. If during the day you just sit back and relax over a tropical cocktail, at night the whole venue comes to life with guest DJs taking over the decks and transforming Hacienda into one of Kotor's best nightclubs.

Things to do in Kotor in August

Since the weather is still sublime and perfect for all kinds of lavish marine activities, you might as well treat yourself to a fabulous Private Yacht Trip with a Photo Shoot included. It's often a first choice for young couples for their wedding photography, but you can easily splurge on that outside of a wedding celebration as well. This tour will take you along the coast line and show you some of the most stunning parts of Kotor's Bay, with their Venetian architecture towering over the blue waters, framed by deep green forests and giant limestone cliffs outlining everything under the enormously blue sky. The tour will take you to some of the best swimming spots of the bay, where the waters are clear and warm, and a professional photographer will document the entire journey, giving you the opportunity to go home with an incredible set of photographic memories.

Kotor has a great appreciation for art as well, and its summer festival encompasses a number of established cultural and artistic events, including the Children's Theatre Festival, Don Branko's Music Days which features international artists performing live classical music in Kotor's town squares, as well as Perast's Klapa Festival and a fascinating series of workshops, conventions and even some touring productions. Check the local website when planning your holiday, so as not to miss out on any of the key events taking place in August.

This is also a perfect time to try some of the mixed tours that take you both on and offshore the Montenegro and Black Mountain Tour from Dubrovnik is an excellent choice, as it takes you not only through the historically beautiful Venetian clusters of Budva and Kotor, but it also shows you the breath-taking natural splendours of Zupa Dubrovacka and the Valley of Konavle, from where you'll get a splendiferous view of Kotor's Bay and Our Lady of the Rocks islet. The way back is different altogether and it also includes a ferry ride across the deep blue waters of Kotor Bay.
