What's the Weather like in Kos in May

Kos in May is the beginning of warm weather and rare probability of rainfall with a decrease in cloud coverage. It seems as though this is the month when the weather decides to merge with the desires of vacationers and so henceforth extends in a direction with favorable conditions for their sake. It is still not part of the warmest months of the season with an average temperature of 68 F, but instead its neutral temperature provides a delicate balance of great Mediterranean weather.

The whole month of May has highs at above 21 C (70 F) as the first week is ushered in at 21 C (70 F) on average. The lows during the first week or so are at around 14.4 C (58 F) as they continue to glide effortlessly upwards throughout the month making the beginning the coolest time of May. Chance of rainfall begins the month at 22 % and continues on a declination all the way into June. Cloud coverage follows the pattern of rain as it has its steepest decline of the year starting the month at 51 % (partly cloudy).

The middle of May continues the pattern that was started at the beginning with highs and lows of 23.3 C (74 F) and 17.2 C (63 F) as the temperature gradually increases to its peak in the main summer months. The chance of rainfall during mid May falls to around 16 % which is less than even a one in five probability making rainfall very uncommon around this time. During the middle of the month cloud coverage falls to 46 % (partly cloudy) marking the start of clear skies to come.

As May comes to an end the highs reach 25 C (77 F) as they continue to steeply rise to their peak making the end of May the warmest part of the month. The lows slow down their ascent but still rise to 65 F as the beginning of June comes in. Chance of rainfall ends the month at around 10 % so the end of May is the clearest part in terms of weather. As the end of the month approaches cloud coverage continues to fall and ends the month at nearly 40 % (partly cloudy) to give it its biggest drop of the year.

The average amount of rainfall in May is as you would expect it to be after hearing about its steep decline at 21 mm divided into 7 days. Rain around this time is a split between thunderstorms and moderate or light rain if it does occur which is uncommon. As the weather clears up the sea temperature begins to get warmer at around 18.8 C (66 F) making May the first month of the year where you can enjoy some swimming without the uncomfortable feeling of being cold.

As the cloud coverage begins to fall the daily hours of sunshine begin to rise to 12 hours as the skies become clearer. This is a two hour rise from the previous month and the beginning of a string of longer days of sunshine on through the end of the summer. These favorable weather conditions are perfect for hitting the beach, renting a bike and exploring the island, or sightseeing in comfortable conditions.

Kos Beach for May

The great thing about May is the ability to hit the beach as the weather conditions become better into the summer months. Now that the weather is not a problem, another arises as there is a bunch of different beaches around the island and it can be difficult to choose which one to visit first! To avoid all confusion you can hire a tour guide to give you in depth knowledge and guided tours of the beaches, so you can choose the one that best suits you or you can try your luck at any of them and find out for yourself.

For a beach that is close to the main part of town try out Lambi Beach which is about 4km North West of Kos Town. This beach has a flat landscape making it ideal for those who love to ride bikes on the beach or take long walks as it leads to Tigaki Village. There are a couple of resorts on this beach as well, so finding a restaurant won't be hard as long as you don't mind exploring. This beach on the north eastern coast of Kos has a marvelous view of Turkey and sparkling turquoise colored water.

Enjoy Kos's beautiful northern coast on the Marmari Limnaria Beach. This fantastic looking beach is well organized with sun beds and umbrellas and is also a popular destination for wind surfing and other kinds of water sports leading into the summer months. Its pearly white sand and vast openness of the ocean is a sight for sore eyes.

Bars and Restaurants

Now that the weather is great people are often out and about making way for many restaurants to open up at the beginning of May. The influx of restaurants leads to more choice and variety and as is often said, variety is the spice of life. Most dining options are available in Kos Town as that area has the highest amount of tourists during all seasons, but for a more interpersonal Kos experience try eating at restaurants in different more distant villages.

If you are visiting around Kos Town a great place to eat is the Kohili Restaurant. This restaurant which opens in May is run by father and son and has a very pleasant environment with a beautiful Greek garden. The cozy and small atmosphere is great for a romantic dinner for two or a family get-together before the start of a long day of island activities. Cuisine is mostly authentic Greek with a complementary touch of International dishes.

Enjoy a great meal near the eastern coast of Kos in the village of Psalidi by Kos Town at the wonderful Akrogiali Taverna. The location inspires a perfect ambiance with a light sea breeze and a view of the marina in the distance all the while eating a delicious Greek meal. There is no better place to have a relaxing picnic-like meal on the island then here, making it a must visit for those near to the Psalidi area.

Things to do in Kos in May

The great thing about May is that it is the first time of the year that you really become free to do what you want to do without the usual weather limitations. The island's beauty really opens up during this month just like the blooming of flowers in the spring.

When the sun is out you should definitely pay a visit to the Lido Waterpark in the pretty village of Mastichari in Kos. Going in May, you'll be the first ones to enjoy the park's eight immensely entertaining slides. These slides range from closed intertubes to high speed to multiple lane types, all of which are bound to keep little ones entertained for hours on end. There's also a pool, Jacuzzi, beach volleyball and tennis.

For those who love the ocean, Michael Archaggelos Sailing is one of the better boat trips on the island. This beautiful sailing boat in the Kos Town marina fits about 18 people along with 3 crewmembers that help out on deck while giving them a great seafaring experience complete with a meal and in depth knowledge about the surrounding Dodecanese Islands.

Do something extreme and take a trip with Superjet Boating located in Kos on the Poseidon- 1's 700 HP Twin Engine. This boat is outrageously fast as it can fit up to 23 people as the captain takes them around the island of Kos doing 360 degree pivot and reverse thrusts, high speed fishtails, and 180 degree spin and dips so it is like a rollercoaster on the water. Scream if you want to go faster!
