What's the Weather like in Kos in February

February is the coldest month of the year in Kos with an average temperature of 10 C (50 F). It is a part of a band of cold months starting in December at the beginning of the winter. This month continues the low dip of highs and lows that began the prior month and it is the last month before temperatures start to rise again. You can also expect a good amount of rain and cloud coverage at all times of the month.

The beginning of February is the coldest time of the month and one of the coldest throughout the year along with the last week of January. You can expect highs and lows of 12.7 C (55 F) and 8.3 C (47 F) so make sure to get accommodations with proper heating and bring your warm winter clothing. Around this time of the month chance of rainfall is at around 47% as it continues its streak from January. Cloud coverage falls to 64% (partly cloudy) during the first week or so of February which is not far from its January average.

By mid-month the highs and lows begin an upwards curve which extends all the way into the summer, but for the meantime the highs stay at around 12.7 C (55 F) and the lows at 8.3 C (47 F). Rainfall begins its downward decline into the summer months at around this time falling to 46% chance while cloud coverage fluctuates at a range of 63 64% (partly cloudy).

The end of February is when things finally start to heat up slowly leading into the summer with average highs of 13.8 C (57 F) and lows of 8.8 C (48 F). This is the warmest point of the month, but it is not so warm as to be able to enjoy without proper clothing. Continuing the declination, chances of rainfall during the last weeks of February are at around an average of 44% probability which correlates with the declination of cloud coverage to 62% (partly cloudy).

Now moving on from the chances of rainfall, the actual average amount in the month of February is around 115 mm divided into 10 days of the month. February is still one of the rainiest months throughout the year being the third month with rainfall over 100 mm. Also February is the peak month for thunderstorms throughout the calendar year, so remember to take the necessary precautions if you are caught outdoors.

Speaking about being caught outdoors, Kos has about 2 miles of beautiful coastline, so there are many beaches to enjoy. Although the weather is not great for swimming, the average sea temperature is 16 C (61 F) if you still want to take a dip at the beach. There should still be sunshine out most of the days as you get a break in the clouds. To help, the average daily hours of sunshine is around 7 hours which is fitting for the winter season as it has the months with the lowest amounts throughout the year.

Kos Hotels in February

February is not a popular time of the year in Kos as it is the coldest, but it still may be difficult to find open rooms in premium resorts. Luckily for you, Kos has many different kinds of places to stay such as Bed and Breakfasts, Apartment buildings, vacation rentals, and standard hotels. This gives the island a great balance as you can stay around the main village of Kos Town or a distant village such as Kefalos, so anywhere you stay will be comfortably fit, especially in the heart of the winter season.

For a quiet retreat in a secluded part of Kos head to the Michaelangelo Resort and Spa in Agios Focas. This hotel is on the southern coast of the island where there is more countryside and attractions such as horse riding, quiet beaches, and hot springs. Also If you need to get into town they offer a great value bus service which can take you anywhere in the island.

To be closer to town you can try staying at the Alexandra Hotel which is a walking distance to everything in Kos town and the main harbor. This hotel is great for people who do not need something extremely luxurious as it isn't a resort, but more of a great location to stay with only the basics such as a restaurant, bar, swimming pool and a standard room. The major thing about it is that it is close to all the ferries and the airport so it is very accessible.

Another hotel in the heart of Kos Town about a block or two from the beach is The Americana Hotel. This mid-range hotel is perfect to keep your budget intact while getting great benefits such as a free breakfast and free parking, which is difficult to find in Kos Town. Other things include high speed internet, luxurious sweets, and a comfortable spacious atmosphere since it doesn't get as crowded as the resorts along the beach.

Another hotel a couple of blocks away from the beach in the island's main district of Kos Town is the Laura Hotel. Recently renovated and under new management, the Laura Hotel has won awards for its outstanding transformation in 2014. It used to be good for its location, but now it's good for its traditional bar, free Wifi, free breakfast, unique rooms, and beautiful organic garden.

Bars and Restaurants

In February a lot of restaurants that you may find in villages that are distant from the main part of the island will be closed down for the winter season as they wait for the high season to make good on their investments. This does not mean that there will be none, just that there will be less restaurants and bars. Whatever you do it is definitely a good time of the year to sit in a cozy little tavern and drink a hot beverage with an authentic and complete meal.

For those who love an ocean view while enjoying a pleasant meal try the H2O Café-Bar Restaurant. This restaurant hybrid is located at the Aktis Dimis hotel and delivers a great service without having to break your budget. Look out into the harbor while seated on a wooden patio and eating a great tasting appetizer with a glass of authentic wine or sit inside and have a delightful candlelit meal, either way you will feel like you are on vacation.

Find a comfortable and cozy modern atmosphere in the Lofaki Café and Restaurant which is perfectly situated in a countryside environment overlooking the town. Watch the stunning sunset from your indoor or outdoor table as you eat a delicious plate of Gamberi Saganaki or a honey cheese dessert. This place is also a great venue for weddings or birthday parties.

Things to do in Kos in February

Kos is great all year round for tourists' attractions since it is filled with interesting cultural buildings and artifacts. This means at any time of the year, even if you are shivering yourself warm, you can enjoy the pleasantries of sightseeing. That is not all though as there are still certain villages which stay buzzing all year round for the locals such as Kos Town where you can find places to go shopping.

Those who love history and exploring ancient buildings will definitely get a kick out of visiting the Knights of St John Castle. This castle is proof that looks are deceiving as from the outside it looks relatively small, but once inside can take hours to explore. Also there are beautiful views of the main harbor as that is where is located so climb on up the ancient stairs and take a marvelous picture in historic fashion.

Another bit of historic semblance in Kos Town is the Agnus Dei Catholic Church located next to the ancient odeon. This place is filled with history from World War II with a monument dedicated to Italian officers that were killed by the Nazis. This solemn and peaceful place is perfect to take a moment and reflect on life with a location so close to the vibrant town yet so quiet. Also there is outdoor mass on Sundays in appropriate languages.

During February on a cool winter day the Embros Therme is the perfect place to be. Take a freshening walk up a hill onto the stunning coastline, but don't head to the ocean, head to the natural hot spring pools. These natural geysers are at around 104 F (40 C) so let them relax, soothe, and warm you up all while listening to the backdrop of ocean waves hitting the coast.

Travel from Kos Town or through the mountains to the ancient Asklepion. This marvelous ancient attraction has three large grounds of broken, but beautifully carved ancient buildings with a great view of the sea. There is also a museum with well preserved writings Greek writings and other historic artifacts. For the full experience you can take a guided tour or view these cultural artifacts at your own pace.

You can head to the Mastichari village in Kos to find the wonderfully serene Hippocrates Garden Cultural Center. At this little remnant of historic Greece you can get a feel for how they lived in ancient times complete with an amphitheater and a couple of houses. A Greek cultural atmosphere is present all throughout this place from a Godly fountainhead to live theater.
