Kavos is the party capital of Corfu Island and one of the most popular spots in Greece for young revellers looking for a party holiday. Corfu is the most northerly of the Greek islands and lies just off the coast at the border between Greece and Albania. Its only 3km to the mainland at itâs closest in the north. Kavos is situated on the southern tip of the island and looks over at the Greek mainland a little over 20kms away.
Kavos enjoys a Mediterranean climate with long hot summers. Winters are a little cool and can be quite wet. Corfu is the wettest of the Greek islands and also the coolest on average.
SUMMER is a time of guaranteed sunshine. It isnât quite as hot as many of the other Greek islands but daily highs of 30°C have helped to turn Kavos into the popular summer holiday destination it is today. Recent years have seen Kavos experience a number of intense heat waves when temperatures have risen up into the 40s.
The hottest summer days are, however, tempered by the cooling sea breezes, making for comfortable temperatures. These winds are at their strongest in July and August when the Meltimi wind blows, which is welcome during the hot summer weather.
Rainfall is very low in summer at around 15 to 20mm. Daily sunshine hours average at an excellent 11 to 12 hours in the peak summer months.
The sea temperature at this time of year is very warm too, peaking at 24°C in late summer: perfect for swimming.
WINTER can get quite cool in Kavos, certainly more so than the other Greek islands. Rainfall is quite frequent too with the wettest month December averaging around 150mm.
Temperatures can drop to the low single digits in mid-winter though temperatures below freezing are almost unheard of.
Sunny winter days do occur with temperatures in the low teens. However, it is normal to get a few consecutive days of stormy, windy weather.
The town becomes very quiet in the winter and many of the hotels and restaurants shut. In addition, ferries to and from the island are infrequent and the sea gets quite rough. Some people do enjoy this quieter time of year, without the throngs of drunken holidaymakers. It is also much cheaper to stay on the island at this time and temperatures are certainly warmer than in northern Europe.
AUTUMN and SPRING are for some the most agreeable times to visit; it depends on what youâre looking for in your holiday, however. Those looking for a party holiday will find it a little dull. But if you are looking to relax and explore the area in relative peace without searing temperatures, theyâre great times. Late spring and early autumn often have daily highs in the 20s and low to moderate rainfall. It doesnât start to get cool until November in the autumn and warmer weather arrives by April in the spring.
Autumn is a little wetter than spring and is often visited by thunderstorms. For the best balance the months of May and September are ideal: plenty of sunny weather with good temperatures and fewer crowds. Party-goers and sun worshippers, however, will be happiest in the peak months of July and August.
