Kassiopi, Greece
'It's so HOT!' basically sums up Kassiopi. The village resort waits at sea level on North-East Corfu for the many holiday-makers who make the annual pilgrimage and it's easy to see why so many English and Italian tourists use Kassiopi for an ideal summer holiday and retreat in the many villas make up the circumference of the village.
Kassiopi doesn't have a traditional winter in the cold and snowy sense, but it does have a summer that's practically on steroids compared to the rest of Europe.
Summer
The selling point of a holiday in Greece! Kassiopi has shorts and bikini weather and forecasts of an average 25°C (77°F) that ranges from 16°C (61°F) to 31°C (88°F). Humidity levels grow from low to high as the summer comes in full force. This ensures that it will feel a whole lot hotter than 88°F throughout the day, maybe even breaching 100°F.
There are plenty of trees around the Mediterranean village, so shade is always on hand to be basked in. Failing that, there's always the Mediterranean Sea right there to cool off in, the water temperature of which ranges around the mid 20°C's (70°F) during the summer.
With very little rain to spoil your holiday (averaging between a mere 7 to 18mm for the whole season) and 15-hour days with 12 hours directly underneath the blazing sun, sunglasses will be invaluable to your stay in Kassiopi.
The village employs all of the classic seaside resort activities ranging from motorboat hire for 70 Euros and scuba diving to choosing from a plethora of restaurants and bars for a nice cold drink.
A warning however: Kassiopi's summer has very high UV (Ultra-Violet) levels and can be hazardous to the skin. Sun screen should definitely be on any holiday-makers list of important things to take. Doctors and pharmacies are also centred in the village just in case you forget to take any.
Winter
The term 'winter' is used only to describe the time of year in Kassiopi, not to represent the climate, but the town's winter can be surprisingly chilly. The temperature only drops to a nippy of 10°C (50°F) with peaks and troughs of 15°C (59°F) and 5°C (41°F) and a mild humidity that has been known to surprisingly coat the village of Kassiopi in some frost. It's a nice mild weather for those cold-loving holiday-makers who prefer to be able to be outside without fear of turning bright red, but also don't like igloos.
A low UV level also ensures longer time outside, but it's better safe than sorry and, not allowing Helios to shirk his responsibilities, the days in winter do have 9 to 11 hours of daylight with 4 of them being in the direct sunlight. It's still decent barbecue weather.
The water remains as blue, admirable and worth at least a quick paddle during the colder seasons too with sea temperatures that range from 14°C (50°F) to 16°C (61°F), but that's not exactly cold is it? Especially when considering that the North Sea drops down to 6°C (43°F) at this time of year.
Snow is more common in Corfu than first imagined, with regions of the island being blanketed in several inches in 2006. Just because it's rare, doesn't mean it won't happen. Still, it would make a unique holiday anecdote in years to come.
