What's the Weather like in Kalkan in May

Summer has arrived at last in Kalkan as May finally begins, after a long winter and tourism off season. This is a very popular time to visit for those who don't like extreme temperatures and busy beaches, but those who still want to enjoy tourism in terms of restaurants, bars, nightlife, shopping, and easy access to major tourist attractions, with excursions now becoming very popular and the weather fast improving, as indicated by live forecasts.

Temperature & Rainfall

The first month of the summer season experiences an average temperature of around 18°C, which can reach up to 24°C as an average high certainly very pleasant after a long winter. Temperatures will typically be higher at the end of the month, compared to the beginning. Night times are still chilly but certainly warming up, with an average low of around 11°C, and certainly very little in the way of rainfall, with only 26mm expected throughout the month, affecting up to 7 days of the whole month to some degree. Rain often tends to come around early evening, and is short and sharp, leaving behind clear conditions, so you are unlikely to experience a total day of wash out at this time of year.

Sunshine

The sun begins to get its hat on now summer has arrived, which makes exploring much easier, with the chance of a sun tan too; you can expect around 13 long hours of sunshine at this time, with days stretching on much longer than previously.

Sea Temperature

If you feel the need to hit the beach, the good news is that the sea is certainly warming up too, with an average sea temperature of around 20°C, reaching a peak at the end of the month. The beaches around the resort and surrounding area certainly won't be packed at this time of year, which is great for families and visitors wanting less in the way of crowds. In fact, surrounding resorts such as Marmaris, which is a little further away, are much busier now than Kalkan, which gives you the ideal choice for a relaxing holiday.

Hotels in Kalkan in May

Piart Hotel

As May is the official start to the summer season in Kalkan, there are now more choices than ever when it comes to accommodation, as well as more choice in the way of board basis. Pirat Hotel is a great choice for those wanting to go half board, meaning you have flexibility when it comes to eating and drinking out. This particular hotel is only a few minutes' walk from the centre of town and the beach, and offers a great value place to stay, with three swimming pools and a roof top terrace for topping up your tan.

Samira Resort

Samira Resort is an equally great choice, and has a self catering, B&B and half board option to choose from. This particular hotel is in an elevated position, which means great views of the surrounding area, including the picturesque harbour. This is a particularly good option for those wanting a quieter holiday, as it is in a residential area of the resort, with a connecting shuttle bus available.

Happy Hotel

Happy Hotel is, as the name sounds, a happy choice! Again, a half board option is available, and at only five minutes' drive from the centre of town, you won't have too far to go when exploring the area.

Hit the beach

Kalkan Public beach

Now the sea temperature is warming up, to a very pleasant 20°C during May, beach time is on the agenda. The public beach in Kalkan is a great place to start, and it is best to visit here during the quieter times, before the crowds flock in peak season.

Kalkan public beach is pebbly, with clear waters sloping down steeply, meaning you don't have to walk on the pebbles for too long. You can rent a sunbed and umbrella for the day, with cafes nearby. If you don't want to walk there, the good news is the dolmus bus will drop you there quite easily.

Bars and Restaurants

Oasis Hotel

Summer has arrived in Kalkan and that means infinite choice of places to eat and drink. Oasis hotel has amazing views over the harbour and sea, which makes your evening meal much more sophisticated. This is a quiet restaurant which is a little under the radar, and serves a large menu of Mediterranean and Turkish food.

Rosemary Restaurant

Alternatively, Rosemary Restaurant is a modern establishment, situated right on the harbour, with bright décor and great service. This is a very popular choice and does get quite busy during the main summer months.

Vanilya Bistro

If authentic is what you're looking for then check out Vanilya Bistro. This is a family run restaurant which offers traditional Turkish dishes, although if you are travelling with someone who is a little fussy, the menu stretches to the more mainstream too, with fantastic burgers and chips on offer, all freshly made.

Things to Do in Kalkan in May

Boat trip

A huge 13 hours of sunshine and increasing temperatures means May is the ideal time to head out on a boat trip, before the heat becomes too much, and the boats are too packed with visitors. You only need to head down to the harbour before 10am to take your pick of boats at this time of year, however to be certain, booking through an excursion agency is the best way to go. If you want a more private experience then arranging a gulet trip is for you. This is a wooden yacht, very Mediterranean and Turkish in origin, and quite a luxurious day out.

Kekova

Most boat trips will circle the bays around Kalkan, however some do go further afield and it is worth heading to Kekova if your particular boat allows. This is a very beautiful part of the region, and one which requires a bus to a nearby village, before you board a glass-bottomed boat for your cruise around the magical coastline. Trips stop for regular swim breaks, as well as diving opportunities, and lunch is generally included, with drinks extra.

Meis

If all this boat fun calls out to you, then you can even head to Greece for the day! Jumping on the dolmus bus to nearby Kas will allow you to visit the Greek island of Meis for the day, where you can truly immerse yourself in a different type of culture.

Palm Beach Club

If however you want to stay on dry land, head to Palm Beach Club in Kalkan itself. This is located on the other side of the harbour, and is a private club where you can truly kick back and relax for the day.
