What's the Weather like in Icmeler in January

Icmeler lies about eight kilometres from Marmaris and is located on the Datca peninsula, Turkey. Once a quiet fishing village, it has been developed into a popular holiday resort. January is a quiet month though. It is wet and chilly, yet there are still plenty of things to do.

Temperature

January has an average daily temperature of 6°C. The average daily high temperature is 8°C, while the average daily low is 3°C. Those three average temperatures are exactly the same as in February. The daily highs and lows are essentially constant throughout the month. There is virtually no difference between the temperatures in the beginning of January and at the end. Historically, January 17 is the coldest day of the year.

Sea Temperature

The average sea temperature in January ranges around 17°C. Only February and March have colder sea temperatures.

Rainfall

January is the wettest month of the entire year. The total amount of rainfall in the course of the month is 178mm and there are 14 days with rainfall. December is the second-wettest month, with a total of 174mm of precipitation and 13 rainy days. The daily chance of rain ranges around 45% throughout the month. There are three main types of precipitation in January. The most common type are thunderstorms. They are most likely to happen in the beginning of the month and are observed on 53% of all rainy days. Light rain is the second-most common and is experienced on 31% of the days with rainfall. Moderate rain occurs on 16% of the rainy days. Snow and frost are extremely unlikely in January.

Cloud

This amount of precipitation has to come from somewhere. Cloud cover is as high as it ever gets in Icmeler in January. January 1 is the cloudiest day of the year with 79% of cloud cover. By January 31 the amount of cloud cover has decreased slightly to 76%, which is still a lot. Besides large amounts of rainfall, there is another consequence of much cloud cover. The days in January typically don't have a lot of sunshine. An average January day has only three sunshine hours, a yearly low, which is shared with December.

Sunshine

The length of days in January increases gradually in the course of the month. January 1 is the shortest day of the month with 9.42 hours of daylight. The longest day is January 31 with 10.20 daylight hours.

Icmeler has a Mediterranean climate, which has mild and short winters, so a trip here in January will still have better weather than January in the UK.

Pamukkale

Pamukkale is one of the absolute highlights in the region, if not in Turkey, and is a strongly recommended place to visit. Pamukkale is one of the most-visited attractions in the country and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is essentially a hill with white mineral baths, waterfalls, thermal pools, stalactites and basins. The ancient city of Hierapolis was supported by the warm water that flows underground and Pamukkale has been in use as thermals baths since Roman times. Pamukkale can be visited on day trips from Icmeler.

Marmaris Castle

Marmaris Castle is another attraction in the area that is worth visiting. It is set on the foundations of a 5,000-year-old fortification. In 1991 the castle became a fine archaeological museum. The Castle and Museum are both good options during one of January's thunderstorms.
