Icmeler, pronounced in English as 'each-mell-er', is a popular tourist resort on Turkey's southwest Mediterranean coast, at the place where the Mediterranean Sea and Aegean Sea meet. It lies just eight kilometres from the well-known tourist town of Marmaris. Once a small fishing village, the town has expanded greatly in recent times, thanks to the tourist trade with visitors who are attracted by water sports, such as scuba diving and water-skiing, as well as the beaches, natural beauty and great climate of the region. The warm surrounding seas and hills that trap the heat help to regulate this excellent climate; the sea temperature, for example, varies between 16°C and 25°C throughout the year.
Situated in the southeastern corner of Europe, Icmeler enjoys a typically Mediterranean climate. This means long, hot and dry summers and cool, wet winters. Average temperatures vary between 6°C in January and February and 25°C in the hot summer months of July and August. July 15 is the hottest day of the year with an average high of 32°C and an average low of 21°C. The coldest day of the year is January 17.
Most of the rain falls in winter with January and December as the absolute wettest months. Summers are almost completely dry: June, July and August receive almost no rainfall at all and have nearly zero days of rainfall. Historically, the wettest day of the year is January 11 with a 46% chance of rainfall. August 2 is the driest day with a mere 2% chance of precipitation. There are three common types of rainfall throughout the year. Thunderstorms are the most common type and are observed on 56% of all days with rainfall. Light rain and moderate rain are the other two types, occurring respectively on 30% and 13% of all rainy days.
The warm season in Icmeler falls roughly between June 11 and September 18. In that period there is an average chance of only 5% that rainfall will occur on any given day. When it does occur, it comes in the form of short thunderstorms. 74% of rainfall in the warm season occurs as thunderstorms and 20% as light rain.
The cold season typically begins around December 1 and lasts until March 31. Then, there is 41% chance of precipitation on any given day. When it happens, it, again, mostly comes in form of thunderstorms. 52% of precipitation in the cold season occurs as thunderstorms, 31% as light rain and 17% as moderate rain.
The amount of sunshine hours per day varies greatly throughout the year. December and January, coincidentally the wettest months of the year, have only three hours of sunshine per day. July and August are the sunniest months with a total of eleven sunshine hours per day. June and September come in second, with a daily average of ten hours of sunshine.
