Weather Lowdown
The summer season is winding down in Hersonissos in September, but the weather is still gorgeous and perfect for a late summer holiday. The sea temperatures are still at a beautiful 25°C, making this a great time of year to enjoy swimming and all the activities in the water with smaller crowds. The days are still long, although gradually getting shorter as autumn approaches, and there are 11 hours of sunshine each day this month. For a similar climate, Rome in Italy is a good alternative, but without the beaches.
The average temperature at this time of year is 23°C, with average highs of 26°C during the day and lows of 19°C at night. Temperatures are still warm enough for late night drinks sitting on a beachfront terrace, but some evenings might be cool and visitors may want to bring a light jacket. Temperatures are gradually falling towards the end of the month, as the days begin to get shorter, and the length of each day decreases by about one hour from the first day of the month until the last. The sun rises at approximately 6.5°am and sets at 7.45pm at the beginning of September.
Humidity levels are starting to increase as the month progresses, from 5°% to 8°% over the course of September. The average rainfall at this time of year is starting to increase to 24mm over 3 days of the month, with a 15% chance of rain during any given day in the month. This is a wetter month than the summer months of July and August, but still dry enough to be able to plan outdoor activities without worrying about rain. If it does rain, there is a high chance that it will be in the form of thunderstorms or moderately heavy downpours so check the forecast before heading out for the day.
Cloud cover ranges from 1°% to 3°% over the month, becoming cloudier later in September. The winds are calm to fresh and measure ° m/s to 8 m/s with occasional windier days of 11 m/s. It is not too humid in this month, with 5°% to 8°% humidity levels on average. The humidity is gradually increasing through the month as it becomes wetter, cloudier and more humid towards autumn.

Things to do
A Jeep Safari is a great way to see the local area and have some fun. Tours last for five hours and visitors drive a hired Jeep through the Dikti Mountains and around the local countryside, stopping for a barbeque lunch and tea and coffee along the way. The open top Jeeps are a great way to experience the local region and see some amazing views of the sea, beaches and villages along the way. Driving through authentic mountain villages and green valleys, before heading through olive groves and vineyards, this is a must-do tour for anyone who is able to drive a car.
While the sea temperatures are still nice and warm, a good way to spend a day is going diving. With interesting dive sites in the area, fascinating marine life and beautiful clear waters, this is a good opportunity to see the other side of Crete below the water. Tailoring activities for experienced divers and first-timers, everyone can take part in this fun activity.
Hit the Beach
When all the local beaches have been explored, head 3km east to the beautiful Stalis beach, a long sandy beach that is divided into two sections. Both are exposed to the wind, so be aware of this on windier days in September and take note of lifeguard's advice. This is a good beach for swimming when the sea temperatures are an average of 25°C, as the gradually sloping beach means it is safe even for children to have a paddle. There are plenty of facilities at this beach, with lifeguards, sun loungers, umbrellas and water sports, and only a short drive or bus journey from Hersonissos.
Restaurants and Nightlife
After a long day at the beach on a warm September evening, visit Fresh bar and restaurant at Hersonissos seafront. With beautiful views and friendly attentive staff, this is a lovely place for a drink or relaxed meal. Located at the water's edge, watch the sunset over the sea while enjoying your meal. Choose from a variety of tapas to share, or a larger main course dish such as a mixed grill or pasta dish.
For beachfront dining with traditional dishes, go to Akrogiali fish restaurant. This authentic, relaxed tavern features mezes, fish and seafood as well as a large choice of salads and vegetarian options. Located right on the seafront at the southern end of the promenade, this restaurant is away from the main crowded area, and is a lovely place to spend a quieter summer evening with a cooling sea breeze while dining outdoors.
For a great night out with DJs and partying, go to Cameo Club at Hersonissos. This legendary nightclub has been hosting parties since 1993, with huge crowds, great drinks and spectacular events, including fire dancers, live percussion drummers and capoeira shows. International DJs play the latest dance, R & B and house music, while the bartenders serve up the best cocktails and drinks.
