Weather Lowdown

May is the end of spring and summer is just around the corner. This is a great month to visit Hersonissos as the crowds are still light, the days are warm but not too hot, and the rainfall has decreased since the winter. The temperatures are still not as hot as those seen in July or August, but if outdoor activities are planned, this may be a more pleasant month to travel. The weather at this time of year is comparable to Athens which is also in Greece, but the beautiful beaches make this resort more appealing.

Average temperatures at this time of year are 18°C, but can range from a daytime high of 22°C to an overnight low of 14°C. The highest recorded temperature at the resort in May was a very hot 37°C, while the lowest was a chilly 8°C. Temperatures are gradually increasing this month and so are the length of days, increasing by around 45 minutes from the beginning of May to the last day. The sun rises at 6.3°am and sets at 8pm at the start of the month. For visitors hoping for a swim in the sea, the water temperatures are still fairly cool at 19°C, but water sports are an option with a wetsuit.

The average amount of rain that falls this month is 22mm over 4 days throughout the month, which is much drier than earlier in the year. The chance of rain decreases during the month from around 2°% chance of rain to 1°% chance as the month ends. If it does rain, there is likely to be moderately heavy rain and maybe a chance of thunderstorms. Cloud cover varies during May but gradually decreases and skies become clearer towards the end of the month. Skies are around 35% cloudy early in May, reducing to 2°% by the end of the month.

Average sunshine hours are starting to increase and there are around 12 hours of sun each day. The humidity levels drop during this month, from 8°% humidity to a more comfortable 45% humidity on average. Wind speeds are slightly lower now than in previous months, typically ranging from ° m/s to 7 m/s, occasionally reaching 12 m/s. A detailed weather forecast is available for planning activities this month.

After all the shopping and exploring, head to a tavern or café for a bite to eat and a refreshing drink.

A visit to the Aquaworld aquarium and reptile centre is a great day out for all the family. Enjoy hands-on interaction with many of the animals, and hold a python around your neck of feeling brave. This is an educational and entertaining day out.
