Weather Lowdown
May is the end of spring and summer is just around the corner. This is a great month to visit Hersonissos as the crowds are still light, the days are warm but not too hot, and the rainfall has decreased since the winter. The temperatures are still not as hot as those seen in July or August, but if outdoor activities are planned, this may be a more pleasant month to travel. The weather at this time of year is comparable to Athens which is also in Greece, but the beautiful beaches make this resort more appealing.
Average temperatures at this time of year are 18°C, but can range from a daytime high of 22°C to an overnight low of 14°C. The highest recorded temperature at the resort in May was a very hot 37°C, while the lowest was a chilly 8°C. The sun rises at 6.3°am and sets at 8pm at the start of the month. For visitors hoping for a swim in the sea, the water temperatures are still fairly cool at 19°C, but water sports are an option with a wetsuit.
The average amount of rain that falls this month is 22mm over 4 days throughout the month, which is much drier than earlier in the year. The chance of rain decreases during the month from around 2°% chance of rain to 1°% chance as the month ends. If it does rain, there is likely to be moderately heavy rain and maybe a chance of thunderstorms.
