Weather Lowdown
As winter comes to an end and spring begins, the climate in Hersonissos begins to improve. The average day time temperature and hours of sunshine start increasing, while the amount of rainfall starts to decrease. If choosing to visit at this time of year, there is a better chance that the weather will stay pleasant for your holiday than if travelling here in winter. The average temperatures are still not as warm as the summer months of July or August, but reach around 13°C, with highs of 16°C and lows overnight of around 9°C. Summer may be a better time to visit if planning on swimming, as the sea temperatures are still a very chilly 16°C and haven't warmed up much since the winter. Things to do
When the weather is not too wet and cold in March, take a trip to nearby Heraklion town, the capital of Crete. This is the region's largest urban area and is a great place to spend the day exploring the old town, or the modern shops. Enjoy walking around the port area, visiting the fortress or city walls. Lion square is at the centre of this city, and is a lovely place to stop, admire the fountain, watch the locals and spend time relaxing in one of the many restaurants and cafes.
If the days are not too cold or wet in March, head to the Crete Golf Course for a round of golf in beautiful surroundings. This is the only 18-hole course on the island and has uniquely challenging and fun holes on a mountain style layout. The course hosts international events during the year and is well maintained. Whether you are a golfer or a novice, this is a fun way to spend a day out.
Restaurants and Nightlife
For a traditional meal with family or friends, take a trip to nearby Koutouloufari village and dine at the Alchemist restaurant. This friendly village Taverna has a casual ambience and serves a range of appetizers, mains and deserts. Specialising in local Cretan cuisine, try the grilled meat, fish or seafood, and wash it down with a choice of cold beer or Cretan wine. This popular restaurant also has wifi and is child-friendly.
The family run Mythos Taverna in the town offers friendly service, great food and relaxed atmosphere. With typical Greek cuisine, the portions are generous and the food is delicious. On offer is seafood, meats, deserts and cocktails as well as cold beers and local wines. This is a lovely place to spend a cool March evening with friends or family.
