What's the Weather Like in Heraklion in January
Temperature
It is the middle of the winter in January in Heraklion which is located on the north coast of Crete. It has an average temperature of 12°C which is the lowest in the year alongside February. This is relatively cool but you will still be able to enjoy some days out at the beautiful wineries, going on private tours and visiting cultural museums.
During this winter month, you may experience temperature highs of up to 15°C which is the lowest in the year and in the evening, temperatures will dip to a cold 9°C. With the average temperature being relatively cool and chilly evenings, be sure to pack a jacket or coat when visiting Heraklion in January.
Rainfall
With the average temperature at its coldest, the average monthly rainfall is at a relatively high 80mm falling over an average of 14 days. This is the second highest rainfall in the year matching February and November and just behind the 100mm experienced in December.
Sunshine
During the month, you will also have an average of 4 hours of sunshine per day which is the least in the year, but not bad compared to some northern European resorts. With the high rainfall and the low amount of daylight hours, this is not the most popular time of year to visit Heraklion. If you do visit though, be sure to check the weather forecast before planning days out.
Sea Temperature
With the average sea temperature being a relatively cool 17°C, it isn't the best month to hit the beach, although the sea will get colder by February. The chance of there being a windy day in January is 45% which is slightly higher than in December when it is 44% but the same as in February when it is also 45%.
The weather in Heraklion is very similar to other locations in Crete, however it does have slightly warmer temperatures and lower rainfall than Chania for example, which has an average temperature of 11°C and an average monthly rainfall of 142mm falling over 15 days during the same month.

If you're after something with a bit more luxury then try the Hotel Oasis which is a 2 star hotel that is a great choice for families. It is highly recommended for its great location, beautiful rooms, excellent service, and great value for money and good cleanliness. It is also a good choice for those of you who are travelling on business.
Prince of Lillies
One of the most popular places to stay when visiting Heraklion is the Prince of Lillies which is a 2 star hotel that is mostly popular among couples. It is a very nice hotel for its 2 star class with lovely rooms and very comfortable beds to sleep in. Everything is beautifully clean and there is a room safe to keep your belongings safe when out and about. It also has a lovely eating area below the trees which is a gorgeous place to have breakfast before heading out.

Merastri
If you're looking for some delicious local cuisine then head to Merastri which is a Greek restaurant which will be one of the best meals you will have during your Heraklion stay. The service here is excellent with the managers and staff being very friendly and welcoming. All of the food on the menu is freshly prepared and will come hot straight out of the kitchen.
Saradari
If you're in the mood for a bit of Mediterranean food then head to Saradari which is a Mediterranean restaurant that has amazing views and equally amazing food. Once you have eaten here, you will want to keep going back.
Things to Do in Heraklion in January
Loggia
A beautiful point of interest to visit is Loggia which is a stunning Venetian building located near Lions Square. Unfortunately you can't get full access to this historical building as it is used as the Mayors Hall. However you can still go inside and discover the wonderful arches and architecture of the building. There are some great places to stop and take photos for you to cherish and remember your trip.
