What's the weather like in Gozo in September

The first half of September in Gozo is traditionally considered part of summer with consistently long days of dry hot sun and warm nights. However, by the middle of September there is a very abrupt chance in the climate on the island. The possibility of higher winds increases. There is a greater chance of rain and slightly lower temperatures to indicate that the summer may well be coming to an end.

Temperature

Average temperatures of 24°C throughout September, make it the perfect location for some late summer sun. Though the main focus of the heat is definitely in the first half of the month. Daily average temperatures only drop to 24°C or 23°C by the end of the month. And while this is still very mild for this time of year, it is significantly lower than the peak temperatures seen in July and August.

On the very coolest days, average temperatures of 20°C ensure Gozo remains extremely pleasant throughout the month. Even on the coldest day in September in recorded history in 2003, the thermometer was still higher than 16°C.

Sea Temperature

Thankfully sea temperatures in September remain very warm with the best beaches in Gozo offering water temperatures of approximately 26°C. And with the midday summer sun not peaking so high and the large summer crowds diminishing, it is a wonderful time to enjoy a full day at the beach or one of the many water sports available on the island.

Sunshine Hours

Expect an average of 10 hours of daily sunshine through most of September, which only reduces to 9 hours as you start to move closer to October. And with the chance of having a sunny day still a very high at 64%, September is a wonderful time to visit.

Rain

Even on wetter days, only an average of 40mm of rain falls in the whole month of September in Gozo. The chance of any one day being rainy is just 26%. And with the possibility of having a cloudy day just 2%, visibility remains very high throughout the entire period.

Mgarr iz-Xini

Mgarr ix-Xini is a wonderful place to soak up the warm waters of September in Gozo. Made famous by Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie in their film 'By the Sea', this small, secluded beach is protected by a terrain of high rocks to provide the ideal out of the way spot. Though the beach itself is all pebbles and has to be reached by a single track road, the water is clear and offers an idyllic place to swim or to snorkel. A wealth of aqua marine life make it highly popular with underwater photographers and offers the sense of tranquillity that Gozo is now known for.

Ghajn Barrani

Ghajn Barrani is a beautiful bay set in the town of Marsalforn. Difficult to access through the wealth of rocks that lie in your path, the end results is definitely worth it. The warm waters in September lap onto a small sandy beach which is ideal for swimming, sunbathing, and snorkelling. And because so few people know about this hidden gem, it is never very busy.
