Golf del Sur, on the southern coast of Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands, promises idyllic weather, year round. The Hotel Rural San Miguel in San Miquel de Abona, is rustic hotel is actually two 17th century houses nestled next to exquisite gardens. The family of the current owners have run the hotel since their great grandfather was a doctor who used the space for his practice and several photographs show the history of the property. It is located on a quiet side road and the rooms are filled with antiques. The location is high in the mountains, away from the hustle and bustle of mass tourism, yet close to the south airport.
Hotel El Sombrerito
The Hotel El Sombrerito in Vilaflor is a small, charming hotel, also located near the Teide National Park. The rooms are simply decorated but with a private bathroom and some have a terrace or balcony for a mountain view. The common areas feels like an old country pub and the bar is popular with the local residents. The restaurant serves traditional Spanish dishes.
Beaches in Golf del Sur for January
El Bolluio Beach
El Bolluio beach, in the district of La Orotava is considered by many to be the most beautiful on the island. It is quit isolated and difficult to reach. Although only 400 yards long, it is a wild and untamed stretch of fine volcanic sand with high waves and strong currents even when the seas appear calm. Because it is so remotehere is no road and it is accessible by a few steps near the banana plantationshe experience is one of pure nature.
El Camison Beach
While El Camison beach ,located between the Los Croistianos and Costa Adeje resorts, is only 120 yards long, it is popular throughout the year as a site for of water-sports or simple relaxation. Because of the breakwater, swimming is excellent. There are many services, including umbrella and sunbed rentals. El Camison is part of a continuous line of beaches that run down this south coast shore.

Buon Italia
The Buon Italia, Calle Fairway Village in Golf del Sur, offers an intimate and casual atmosphere featuring selected Italian cuisine. Using only the finest ingredients, the restaurant features fresh pastas, pizzas and special tapas with a Mediterranean flair. The menu includes steaks and seafood, a risotto and ravioli stuffed with salmon, spinach and ricotta. Be sure to have Sergio's sangria while siting in the gazebo.
Tapas Pato de Oro
Tapas Pato de Oro in San Blas, specialises in traditional Spanish tapas such as baby squid, chicken skewers, barbecue ribs and calamari. Larger entrees include a steak with peppercorn sauce and a shoulder of lamb. The kitchen is open for viewing and the atmosphere has a contemporary feel with soft music in the background and outdoor seating if you choose. Be careful not to order too much but be sure to have the creme brulee.
Cafe Med Bistro and Bar
The Cafe Med Bistro and Bar is located in the Royal Tenerife Country club at San Andres. It provides complete daily menu from a full breakfast, lunch and dinner items. Live sports events are shown in the bar and free Wi-Fi is available for customers. There are daily specials plus other favourites such as homemade steak pie, fish, nachos, fajitas, burgers and traditional fish and chips. They actually have a haggis stuffed chicken. Although it is in the country club, it is a family owned restaurant.
Things to do in Golf del Sur in January
Golf
The largest and most prestigious of all the Tenerife course golf cubs is Golf del Sur located along the picturesque south coast overlooking the ocean in San Miquel de Abona. It is actually three courses. The nine hole "North" course is the the most varied, running through the woods with a large canyon besides the third and fourth holes; the "South" course, and a traditional "Links" course, built for the Scottish style of play.
Scuba Diving
Tenerife Scuba, in Costa Silencio on the south coast, offers quality diving and training for experienced and beginning divers. Sarah and Chris provide an enjoyable, family-friendly, club-like atmosphere. For the novice, classes are provided: three hours of training, then an exciting 40 minute dive in shallow waters. There is daily pick up from your hotel and Chris will take underwater photographs of your adventure.
Teide National Park
The world famous Teide National Park is a must see for any visitor to Tenerife. The area is a microcosm of the volcanic nature of the island with a magnificent view from the sometimes snow capped Mt.Teide. The landscape displays the natural flora and fauna including white broom, the Canary island wallflower, and the Teide daisy while can be found as high as 12000 feet on the side of the volcano. The petrified forest is so unique that parts of Star Wars and The Planet of the Apes was filmed there.
