The Protestant Reformation

The Reformation movement, initiated by Martin Luther in the 16th century, changed the Christian Europe forever. The Protestant Reformation addressed the corruption in the Catholic Church and demanded that services should be served in the language the congregation understands instead of Latin. The name of the movement indicates that the final goal of the Protestants was to reform the Church. The persistence of the officials of Rome, however, resulted in the division instead.

From then on, the Christian Religion consisted of three branches Catholicism, Protestantism and Orthodoxy. The division of Catholic (Western) and Orthodox (Eastern) Christianity ensued in the 11th century (the Great Schism). Back then, the split occurred between the institutions in Rome and Constantinople (nowadays Istanbul, Turkey) in the Byzantine Empire.
