What's the Weather like in Funchal in October

The temperatures start to cool down in FunchalMadeira, in October as the town heads towards winter and the rainy season. Rainfall increases dramatically from September, but there's still plenty of sunshine and warm weather to enjoy. October is a great time to visit to catch some last-minute sun before winter.

Temperature

Daily average temperatures sit at around 21°C throughout October, though you can expect temperatures to rise to 23°C and above during the hottest parts of the day. Nights are mild with temperatures hardly ever dropping below 19°C, but it's a good idea to pack layers if you're visiting Funchal at this time of year. T-shirts and shorts are perfect for daytime exploring, but you'll probably want a jumper or two for after dark especially if you plan on participating in some al fresco dining, which is popular in the town. Don't forget to slip some suncream into your luggage too, as the sun's rays are still strong in October.

Rainfall

Winter is the rainy season in Funchal and, even though October is still autumn, there is a significant increase in rainfall from the previous months. Around 100mm falls over an average of 12 days, so it's likely you'll get caught in a shower or two at some point. The Mediterranean climate that characterises Funchal means that downpours pass quickly, making way for clear skies and sunshine. Pack an umbrella and some waterproofs, though, to be on the safe side.

Sunshine Hours

Its location close to North Africa means that there's very little variation in sunshine hours throughout the year in Funchal. In October you can expect to see around 5-6 hours of sunshine per day. This may not seem like a lot, but there is still plenty of time for you to get out and discover all that the town has to offer.

If you're looking for a warm hotspot to soak up some last-minute sun before winter sets in, then Funchal might just be the place for you. October is characterised by cooler temperatures and considerably more rain than the summer months, but there is still plenty of sunshine and hardly any crowds.

Funchal Beaches for October

Machico

Most of the beaches in Funchal are made up of black volcanic sand or pebbles and unusual rock formations. This means there are lots of quirky coves, but very few long stretches of tropical sands. However, if it's sprawling sand you're looking for, then head 20 minutes to the east of Funchal to the town of Machico where there is a man-made sandy beach that looks authentic with its rows of sun-loungers. Here, you can kick back and soak up the October sun with a book or, if you're feeling brave, splash around in the calm waves.

Bars and Restaurants

Whitehouse Pub and Restaurant

The Whitehouse Pub and Restaurant is a laidback place to eat with a charming outdoor seating area perfect for enjoying the October sunshine in. Inside, the décor is traditional and simple, with lots of dark-wood furniture and quirky chandeliers. Sporting events are regularly shown on the two large television screens, and the expansive menu features a range of typical Mediterranean cuisine including Portuguese kebabs, tender beef steaks, and plenty of fresh fish dishes.

Chalet Vincente

Chalet Vincente offers a stylish, upmarket restaurant choice with a laidback atmosphere and a mouth-watering selection of well-presented dishes. The interior is bright and airy, and there's an outdoor terrace, too, but it's the menu that's the star of the show, boasting unusual but tasty dishes like squid marinated in vinegar and freshly grilled tuna steak.

Things to do in Funchal in October

Igreja do Colegio Sao Joao Evangelista

For a cultural excursion, take a trip to the Igreja do Colegio Sao Joao Evangelista which is a church with a bell tower that you can climb. Here, you can make your way up the stairs to the summit and enjoy the views of Funchal that greet you at the top, or simply stick around in the church and admire the beautifully ornate frescos, mosaics, and stained-glass windows. There are also displays that document the history of the building and its role in Funchal, as well as explanations of the restoration work that it has undergone over the years.

Pregetter's Orchid Garden

If you're on the hunt for peace and quiet outside of Funchal's town centre, then head to Pregetter's Orchid Garden, which is set a little outside of the town in a secluded, beautiful garden. It's small and easy to miss, but once you get inside you're greeted with a huge collection of colourful orchids from all different walks of life. There's also an on-site café where you can grab a hot drink and bask in the tranquillity of the gardens.
