Sotavento Beach
Sotavento Beach is one of the longest beaches in Fuerteventura, stretching on for 5km along the south eastern coast of the island. This beach forms a 27km-stretch of sand which starts at Playa Blanca and ends at Morro Jable on the island's southern tip. The PWA Windsurfing and PKRA Kite Boarding World Cup Championships are held here every year because of the ideal weather conditions naturally created at this spot.
The prevailing north easterly trade winds receive a double acceleration at this part of the island, making the wind incredibly strong and therefore creating optimum conditions for slalom, speed and freestyle. Consistent winds, waves up to 2m-high and flat water are practically guaranteed in June. With the exception of a few beach bars, there are no facilities available here. And although it isn't a dedicated nudist beach, many people do practise natural sunbathing at Sotavento Beach.
El Casaron
El Caserón is a large beach set in La Oliva, within the Natural Park of Corralejo Dines in the north of the island. Compared to the likes of Sotavento beach, El Caserón is fairly small, only measuring 300m long. However, since the crowds of tourists which flock to Fuerteventura in summer haven't yet descended on the island in June, you'll still have plenty of room to relax and the kids will have loads of room to play.

Windsurfing
Since the strong trade winds are just beginning to pick up in Fuerteventura in June, now is a great time to have a go at windsurfing. El Cotillo on the north western coast of the island is a particularly popular spot for the water sport due to the almost guaranteed windy conditions and strong waves. The waves generally get larger as the tide drops and they always close out at the same point about 10m offshore where there is a ledge in the seabed.
The best time to catch the biggest waves is during low tide, especially one hour before high tide when they're at their very highest. During high water, this beach also has a steep shelf, which creates a significant shorebreak and backwash. The wind and the current both move in the same direction south and the clear quality of the water means that you can easily spot any dangerous rocks and avoid them.
Watersports
If you're a novice or have never tried windsurfing before, you can sign up for a windsurfing course with Watersports Fuerteventura. This water sports group offers beginner windsurfing courses for travellers aged eight and over and take place in a small sheltered bay a ten minute drive away from Costa Calma. For the price of the course, you'll get 2-10 hours of lessons spread out over 1-4 days, pick-up drop-off shuttle bus service and the use of a board, sail and wetsuit.
