What's the weather like in Fuengirola in January

The month of January is, on average, the coldest time of the year in FuengirolaSpain. However, because of its location on the southern coast of Spain, the Costa de Sol to be exact, the temperatures in January are actually mild. The average daily temperature is 11°C (52°F), with an average high of 15°C (59°F) and an average low of 6°C (43°F). With a fairly big gap between the average high and low temperatures (9°C/16°CF), wearing layers is a must.

Temperature

The average temperature for the beginning of January is 12°C (54°F), with plenty of sun and a minimal chance of rain. Temperatures cool of slightly during the middle of the month to an average of 11°C (52°F), again with lots of sun and an even lower chance of rain. The end of January sees the temperature go back up but just barely to 11.5°C (53°F) and the chance of rain slightly increasing as well, to levels on par with the beginning of the month.

The hottest days of January tend to come at the start of the month (around the 3rd or 4th), with an average high of 16°C (61°F) and an average low of 8°C (46°F). Although not significantly colder, the middle of January (from the 11th to the 13th) is the coldest part of the month with an average high of 15°C (59°F) and an average low of 6°C (43°F).

Average Sunshine Hours and Cloud Cover

Along with mostly mild temperatures, you shouldn't have to worry about rain in January either. While the seven hours of a sun a day in January pales in comparison to the yearly high of 14 hours that occurs in July, the days are no longer getting shorter this month and the sun should be shining during most of your daily activities. January, on average, produces clear days with minimal clouds.

Rain

On the average, there are 13 days of rainfall in January, totaling just 83mm (3.3 inches). This averages out to a tiny 6.4mm (0.25 inches) a day, so the chance of having an outdoor activity ruined by rain is slim. However, when it does rain, it has been known to last for two to three days, usually followed by extended sunshine. In case this happens, having indoor activities planned ahead of time is a must.

Average Sea Temperature

Fuengirola has many beaches, and while you can still enjoy them in January, swimming is not in the equation unless you are feeling adventurous. January shares the coldest average sea temperature of the year with February and March at 16°C (61°F). One perk of going to Fuengirola in January is that you will not have to fight for beach space, so if you do decide to brave the water, you won't have far to run to reach your towel.

Humidity

Since Fuengirola is located right on the Alboran Sea (the western section of the larger Mediterranean Sea), it has a Mediterranean climate that produces a humid environment. The average relative humidity can fluctuate on a daily basis, but for the month of January, it is around 70%. This is a high percentage and can be uncomfortable for some.

Fuengirola Hotels in January

The Florida Spa Hotel is a four-star hotel located just off of the beach. Every room comes with both air-conditioning and heating (which can come in handy in January). Guests have the option of booking a "standard" room, or upgrading to a "superior" one, which provides a bit more space. Regardless of which room is selected, guests have access to the hotel's renowned spa, offering several different types of massages, body wraps, and water treatments.

In addition to the spa, there is also a swimming pool (heated in the winter months), a restaurant, and several bars all within the hotel. They also put on a variety of shows throughout the year, such as flamenco dancing. The Florida Spa hotel overlooks Fuengirola's port, and thus the rooms have sea views. The hotel is located about six minutes from the city centre.

The Hotel Casa Consistorial is a four-star hotel located in Fuengirola's "historical centre," which is about a 12 minute walk to the city centre. They offer a few options for rooms, ranging from traditional rooms with double beds, to deluxe and premium suites, which come with private patios or balconies and additional space. All rooms come with wireless Internet and air-conditioning/heating, but do not have sea views. The hotel has a pool with an accompanying bar, three restaurants, a sauna and spa offering massages, as well as a hair and beauty salon.

Bars and Restaurants

Dominique's Restaurant has a large menu that offers several different types of food from traditional tapas and fresh seafood to pizza and burgers this place has it all. It is moderately priced, so you don't have to worry about breaking the bank either. Dominique's is also capable of hosting large groups and is about a 25 minute walk from the city centre.

After dinner, head over to Speakeasy Jazz Club & Cocktails for some drinks and entertainment. This cocktail bar is modelled after the bars that sold alcohol during the Prohibition era in the United States during the 1920's. The bartenders create high-end cocktails of your choice and local musicians play live jazz music. The bar opens at 8 PM and closes at 3 AM and is located about an eight minute walk from the city centre.

Things to do in Fuengirola in January

Often referred to as the "symbol of Fuengirola," the Sohail Castle is a must-see for any visitor. It was first built in 956 AD, and ruins on the castle grounds date back to the Roman Empire. The castle has been a part of several battles throughout history, with various groups laying claim. Christian fighters took over the castle after doing battle with the Nazari Kingdom of Granada in 1485, and many years later in 1810 during the War of Independence, the French army conquered the castle. A museum in the castle's interior explains the history of this great structure. Sohail castle is located high on a hill, which allows for stunning views in all directions. It is open every day, from 10 AM to 9 PM.

A great way to see the city is by using the Fuengirola Hop-on Hop-off City Tour Train. A ticket costs just 6.50 and is valid for an entire day. There are audio guides available in eight languages explaining the sights and history of the city. With 14 stops located throughout the city, you will likely find yourself nearby one, and able to join the ride, or jump off, at any time.

If you are a fan of the theatre, you must check out the Salon Varietés. This English speaking theatre puts on various types of shows, from musicals and comedies, to dramas. They are open Monday through Saturday from 11 AM to 2:30 PM, as well as one hour before their shows begin, which is usually at 8 PM. The theatre is located less than five minutes walking from the city centre.
