Things to Do in Florence in July

Basilica di Santa Croce

Basilica di Santa Croce is the primary Franciscan church of Florence and is classed as a minor basilica of the Roman Catholic Church. Located on Piazza di Santa Croce, 800m from the Duomo, this religious structure is most famous for being the burial site of some of the most famous Italians in history, including Rossini, Gentile, Foscolo, Machiavelli, Galileo and Michelangelo.

Other church highlights include the frescoes painted by Gaddi in 1380 which tell the story of the holy cross, frescoes by Giotti which depict scenes from the lives of St John the Evangelist and St Francis, a gilded limestone relief by Donatello and a memorial to the 19th century Giovanni Battista Niccolini which is said to have inspired the construction of the Statue of Liberty.

M. G. Designs

Pick up an authentic souvenir or some unique gifts for friends and family back home from M.G. Designs during your holiday in Florence. This art studio displays and sells original hand-painted ceramics made by Maria Giovanna an artist who has created these ceramics for more than 25 years.

Most of the pieces here were designed by the Tuscan landscape and feature flowers, vineyards, olive trees and countryside views which are painted on bowls, dishes, vases, pitchers and other house decorations and kitchenware all of which are dishwasher safe and lead free. You can choose to buy something directly from the shelves or request a one-of-a-kind piece made just for you.

I Mosaici Di Lastrucci

I Mosaici Di Lastrucci is another art studio worth visiting during your trip. Set inside a medieval building which dates back to 1335, this art studio displays and sells a variety of mosaics which are made according to traditional techniques which date back to the 16th century. Each piece of every mosaic is cut with a saw-like tool made from a tree branch and an iron wire. The pieces are then glued together with a combination of pine resin and virgin wax.

Instead of the usual square-shaped mosaics often used in tiles, the mosaics in I Mosaici Di Lastrucci are cut into all sorts of shapes and used to form images for portraits, landscapes and street scenes so delicate they look like they were hand-painted. If you've got the cash, you can choose to buy one of the pieces, or if you're on a budget, you can simply admire the studio as if it was an art gallery.

Chiesa di Ognissanti

Chiesa di Ognissanti is a Franciscan church originally dedicated to all the known and unknown saints and martyrs. Completed during the 1250s, but almost entirely rebuilt around 1627 according to Bartolomeo Pattirossi's baroque designs, this church is best known for housing Domencio Ghirlandaio's "Last Supper" painting which inspired Leonardo di Vinci to paint his own.

Other points of interest within the church include the burial site of Botticelli and ceilings decorated with frescoes. Chiesa di Ognissanti is completely free to enter, although donations are gratefully accepted.
