What's the Weather like in Faro in May 

Temperature

May in FaroPortugal marks the start of the tourist season, as the Algarve region starts to see an influx of visitors. The weather warms up and there is extensive sunshine. The end of May would be the ideal time to visit to experience the warmest weather of the month.

The average temperature throughout May is 18°C (64°F). The high temperature can get up to 22°C (72°F), these highs are most common after May 21st. The low temperature lowers to 13°C (55°F), which is most common from the start of May until the 11th. May sees daily rising highs with only one day in ten exceeding 28°C (82°F) or going below 18°C (64°F). Daily lows only fall below 9°C (49°F) or exceed 19°C (66°F) one day in ten.

Rain

The average rainfall for May halves that of the previous two months with only 20mm. This is an average of 7 days of total rainfall for the month or about 1 in 5 days. Rain is most likely to occur at the beginning of the month with the most common form being moderate rain. Light rain and thunderstorms are also most likely at the beginning of the month. The chance of rain for the end of the month falls to 16%.

Humidity 

The average humidity stays consistent with that of April at 70%.

Sunshine Hours 

Average sunshine hours sees a significant increase from April going from 9 to 12. This is the most sunshine Faro will experience throughout the year as June, July, and August also see 12 hours of average sunshine. The sunshine slowly increases as the month goes on with the most on average occurring towards the end of the month.

Average Sea Temperature 

May is the first month of the year to see an increase in average sea temperature at 19°C (66°F). The previous four months averaged a sea temperature of 17°C (63°F).

Faro Hotels in May

A no-frills option in central Faro is Pensao Central. This guesthouse is run by a lovely owner and has 8 immaculately clean rooms. Rooms at the front have balconies that overlook the square. Request a room in the back to limit noise. Rooms can be booked for 50 and have larger rooms to accommodate 3 or 4 people. The best part of staying here is the location, you would easily be able to have a car free holiday with everything within walking distance.  

For those only visiting for a short time, or needing an airport hotel, stay at Hotel 3K Aeroporto de Faro. This 3 star hotel offers modern rooms and amenities at a value price. The hotel is conveniently located 5 minutes walking distance from Faro Airport. There is free Wi-Fi on offer as well as an outdoor pool. 

 

Faro Beach for May 

One popular beach you shouldnt miss is Praia da Rocha. Located in the nearby resort of Rocha this beach is well worth the trip. Rocha has been up and coming in the past years due to a redevelopment project and the aesthetically pleasing cliffs. Along the main avenue, Tomas Cabreira, you will find everything from hotels, outdoor cafes, casinos, nightclubs, and bars. With the massive amount of space on the beach, you won't have to battle for towel territory. If you want to take the whole view in, head to the end of Tomas Cabreira Avenue and you will find the Fortress of Santa Catarina de Ribamar. This fortress was part of Portimao's defences against pirates and offers an amazing view of the beach, cliffs, and marina. 

Bars and Restaurants 

A great place to dine in central Faro is p a p a r a z z i. An Italian restaurant with a laid back atmosphere, this eatery is family friendly and reasonably priced. The portions are large, too, and you can expect  to enjoy traditional Italian dishes such as gorgonzola penne, spaghetti bolognese, bruschetta, calzones, and pizza. The wine list is small, but like the food, well priced. The staff have a reputation for being warm and attentive. Check out their Facebook page.

Those looking for authentic Portuguese cuisine should head over to Restaurante Chefe Branco. Located about ten minutes walking North West of central Faro, all kinds of diners are welcome here, couples, families, locals, and visitors alike. A stand out dish is the pork and shellfish cataplana which is meant for two but could easily feed more. Be aware that smoking is allowed inside, so it might not be a top choice for families.

Things to do in Faro in May 

If you are looking for an active holiday, you should check out Marco Baioa Luxury Residential Fitness Boot Camp. The boot camp takes place at the Cascade Wellness & Lifestyle Resort in nearby Lagos and is all about boosting your physical and mental well-being. Upon arrival, each participant goes through an evaluation to cater to individual needs. A typical day starts with a detox drink and yoga, followed by a relaxation workout, lunch is then provided, followed by a varying workout hours later, and finally dinner. Those interested in archaeology should go and see the Milreu Ruins. Built in the 1st century, the ruins are of a Roman villa. You will get a glimpse of how the Romans lived and there are several mosaics found throughout the site. The cost is cheap at 2 and it is easily accessible just north of Faro in Estoi.
