Faro Beach for February
If you're looking for an interesting day trip, head to Praia Gale Beach. It is near the resort of Albuferia, about 15 miles west of Faro. This beach has many different rock formations, caves, and grottoes, perfect for the family to explore on a nice day! The area in general is much less developed than what you find in other Algarve resorts and serves as a nice change of pace. If you wander along the coastline you can see the different beaches that make this one of the best spots in central Algarve.
Bars and Restaurants
There is an abundance of restaurants in Faro to suit all tastes and budgets. So be prepared to try something modern, traditional, and everything in between.
A great place to try Portuguese cuisine is Portas de Sao Pedro. In this family run restaurant you will find mainly Portuguese tapas. There is also a menu of the day where you will find items such as fried squid, chorizo with eggs, and several rice dishes. Due to the small, open kitchen as well as popularity with locals, there is a great vibe at this restaurant. This also translates to a wait, but it will be worth it!
For those wanting something other than Portuguese, try Belle Epoque, an Argentinean steakhouse and recipient of the TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence 2014. Don't let the rustic appearance fool you, the food and service are excellent. It is child friendly and can cater to larger groups. The house specialty is a "Soup and Steak" dinner, be sure to try it!
Things to do in Faro in February
With the average temperature being 13°C (55°F), chances are you will have a cool day on your holiday. Take this opportunity to see the "Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Carmo" & "Capela dos Ossos" in the Old Town part of Faro. The church was completed in 1719 and is gilded inside with Brazilian gold. The chapel's name translates to "The Chapel of Bones" and is quite literal. Inside this 19th century chapel you will find the walls lined with skulls and bones of the dead. Entrance to the church is free and entrance to the chapel is 1.
After seeing the church and chapel, be sure to check out the "Arco da Vila". This archway leading into Old Town commemorates a gateway to the city and was constructed by an Italian architect, Francisco Xavier Fabri, in 1812.
